Community-Led Favela Tours Inquiry

If well-employed, favela tourism can be empowering. But for this to happen, guides should be community-based and tours on foot. Community perspectives should be delivered and inside knowledge will help visitors understand the inner workings of these fascinating communities, leading to a deeper understanding and awareness of the issues faced by residents. Tours offered by outsiders and in jeeps, where few resources reach residents and community perspectives are not shared not only provide a poor understanding to visitors, but are highly detrimental to the effective development of Rio's favelas.

As such, Catalytic Communities is working with a range of favela-based and -directed tour guides and organizations to help people interested in visiting and learning about Rio's favelas in a more nuanced and responsible way, to find appropriate community-led tours. Please fill in the form below and we'll be in touch.

We work with tour guides born and raised in a variety of favelas including Rocinha, Vidigal, Prazeres, Babilônia, Alemão, Santa Marta, Providência, Cantagalo, and Vale Encantado in addition to organizing Educational Visits in favelas in all zones of the city based on more specific group interests (www.catcomm.org/ecv).

Alternately, you can reach us by email at visit@favela.info.
