Fourth Annual Dade County Scarecrows on the Square!  October 3rd 2026                                            Hosted by the local scout units in Dade County
This fundraising event is hosted by the Dade County Scouting America Units: Cub Scout Pack 3229, Scouts BSA Boys Troop 29 & Scouts BSA Girls Troop 1029 and the local Girl Scout Troop 40019. We are collecting canned food for the Dade Food Pantry and would love your help! We are hosting a scarecrow contest as a fun way to promote the food drive.

We invite the public to come vote for their favorite Scarecrow(s).  4 cans of food = 5 tickets. You can vote more than once and for more than one scarecrow so watch the Dade GA Scouts page on Facebook for updates on great canned food sales!

For the Scarecrow contest:
Dade Businesses, Non-Profit Organizations, School Groups and Families are invited to enter one or more scarecrows with a donation of $20 this will be evenly divided among our scout units to help cover the cost of supplies for this event and will also go towards our scout fees for 2027. Your $20 covers space rental for the month and maintenance of your scarecrow. Set up is 10:00am to 1:00pm.

Scarecrow voting: The community is invited to vote! Bring 4 cans or more of food to "buy" your votes!  The more cans you donate the more votes you get to use! Voting is from 2:00-4:00pm

 Making the Scarecrow:
Use your imagination to select a theme for your scarecrow. The scarecrow contest is family friendly. Scarecrows should be whimsical, humorous, mischievous, traditional, or lovable – NOT frightening. Monsters, gruesome, bloody, or especially scary entries will be disqualified.
All scarecrows must be in good taste and not reflect controversial, social, or political situations and appropriate for viewing by the public. Any scarecrow deemed inappropriate or in bad taste will not be displayed.
Ideas: Typical Farm & Garden Scarecrow made from cast-off clothing, burlap, gunny sacks, jeans, overalls, straw hats, bonnets, corn shucks, raffia straw, etc. Whimsical, Fairytale, Humorous, Fantasy, Celebrity, etc. Design depicting your favorite fairytale, storybook, animal, or fantasy figure. Theme depicted around the business you are partnered with (bakery, restaurant, boutique, law office, etc.). School themed scarecrows supporting sports, band, majors, concentrations or just school spirit are great for students or parents.
Construction: All entries must be hand-made and if possible, constructed from recyclable/reused/repurposed and natural materials. Scarecrows must be durable and able to stand up to sun, wind, and rain showers. In case of scarecrows/parts of scarecrow becoming lost or damaged do not put anything on the scarecrow that is highly valued or of great importance. All parts of the scarecrow should be securely fastened. Participants assume all responsibility for their scarecrow and its pieces. We reserve the right to remove any entries that do not maintain their ability to be displayed. Make them bright and use interesting materials. Minimum height is four feet and maximum height is six feet.
Please fill out the following information and a scout family will be in touch to collect your entry fee. We look forward to seeing these amazing scarecrows on the Square!

I am entering a scarecrow in the contest and will be bringing $20 when I set up. I understand that my scarecrow will be up for the entire month of October and must be secured to a pole around the square. If my scarecrow should need to be removed due to damage, I will be notified by a local scout unit. They will clean up and hold my items at the scout hut in Jenkins Park for me to pick up later. *
