On Saturday 7 June, in London near Euston, we are coming together to explore how we can defeat narratives of division. With less than four years to the most likely date of the next general election we want to develop an action plan to ensure our people don't make the mistake of believing that their best hope comes from politicians who see Donald Trump as a role model.
The event, supported by GFTU, NEU and CWU, will include, contributions from HOPE not hate, the Institute of Race Relations, Compass, Stand up to Racism, and Unlock Democracy,
And specific sessions on:
- Narratives of division and the LGBTQ+ community
- Trade Union responses to the growth of narratives of division
- Taster sessions from the Ella Baker School of Organising’s defeating narratives of division training
- Faith groups’ role as anchor institutions within our communities
- Institute for Race Relations
- Compass (on building a 'united front'
- Stand up to Racism
- Unlock Democracy
- HOPE not hate
- Climate denial and the authoritarian populists
The event will be designed to be: Intersectional and inclusive, action-oriented, open to many voices, curious, educational, and participatory.
We are determined to bring together people from faith, trade union, race equality, LGBTQ+, disabled and women's organisations, as well as people from the democracy sector and the traditional anti-fascist movement. Places will be limited, but we are determined to ensure that the day will include representatives of every community impacted by narratives of division, as well as those within the grassroots and leadership of our movement participants.
To achieve this rich diversity we will not be allocating places on a 'first come, first served' basis, but on the basis of convening a genuine mix of experiences and perspectives. However, we will soon start to allocate places, so the earlier you apply, the more chance you have of getting a place. This event is the first in a series, and we commit to ensuring that everyone who applies, whether or not they are allocated a place on this occasion, will have the opportunity to participate in this discussion in one form or another.
Please complete this form as comprehensively as you can. This will help us to both allocate places as fairly as possible, and to ensure the smooth running of the conference
This conference is convened by the Ella Baker School of Organising.
