Register below to enter your team in the Blackberry Brigade blackberry picking competition! Teams pick blackberries along Raleigh greenways and then bring their berry haul to be weighed in to see who has the most berry poundage! The winning team and runner up will receive some fantastic prizes! You can choose to keep your berries OR better yet, donate them and package them to be sold to local chefs, with all proceeds going to the community garden at Neighbor to Neighbor Community Outreach Center! Various berry-themed activities for teams to enjoy will also take place at the weigh-in site, including blackberry-themed snacks by Common Roots Project.

Piedmont Picnic Project will be partnering with Community Food Lab and Second Saturday to host the day's events as part of the City of Raleigh's Art along Blount Street dedication and in conjunction with the Shaw Summer Sizzles concert series!

Schedule:

8:30 AM - 1:00 PM - Teams can pre-register or register on site at any point during this time. We'll be there all day! You can bring your berries to be weighed at any point during this time as well, but ALL berries must be weighed by 1:00 PM at the latest!

1:00 PM - ALL berries must be weighed by 1:00 PM to count for the competition!

1:15 PM - Winners announced and prizes awarded!

The event will be based at Estey Hall at Shaw University (corners of E. South and Blount Streets) in downtown Raleigh.

    Competition Guidelines:

    Enter your name below if you agree with the following Blackberry Brigade guidelines. +Please bring with you everything you need to forage your berries (buckets, baskets), and please prepare for active walking in hot weather (bring water, bring a hat and sunscreen, wear comfortable, close-toed shoes). +Practice foraging safety and etiquette. Do not forage from private property without permission. Be careful of potential hazards like thorns, poison ivy, anthills, snakes, etc. +You will be provided with a map of potential berry foraging locations. Suggested foraging locations will be on or near greenway locations throughout Raleigh. +You do not have to collect the berries within the specified time or recommended locations (but please see guideline regarding berry freshness). +Please be conscious of from where you pick your berries. Avoid low-lying or polluted areas such as near busy roads. If plants are dry or shriveled or look “burned” in any way, avoid them - they have been sprayed with herbicide. +All berries must be fully ripe and of good, fresh quality (not bruised or mushy). If your berries contain unripe or unfresh berries, you will be asked to sort them and resubmit for weigh-in. +All berries must be submitted for weigh-in by 1:00 PM, Saturday, July 11 in order to qualify for the competition. You may still submit berries later that day for the cause, but they will no longer count toward your competition weight after 1:00 PM. +All berries will be weighed in a standardized container on site. +The winning team will be the one with the highest poundage of berries. +The winning team and runner-up will receive an awesome prizes! +You can keep or donate your berries. +All donated berries will be sold to local chefs with proceeds going to a neighborhood cause! +Please stay to help us package the berries while enjoying the music, food, and other activities on site!
