This year, we will celebrate our 12th One Wave with the theme of "Pacific Peace". Hosted on Lekwungen territory, this year's celebration will begin on September 12th, followed by two weeks of arts events and as follows.
September 12th — One Wave Opening Ceremony and Exhibition
This year our opening ceremony will take place on September 12th at MediaNet’s FLUX Gallery in the form of an artistic exhibition. We will be honouring the legacy of the incredible gathering that took place in 2017 for One Wave’s 10th anniversary. The gallery will feature video works and other media installations celebrating the historic 2017 One Wave Gathering anniversary as well as Pacific culture and history.
Also at the gallery will be screenings of the Vaka-Taumako project representatives. Through this exhibition, we hope to foster a space that welcomes dialogue, as well as celebrates Pacific cultures. After the opening of the exhibition, the gallery space will be open from 12pm-5pm, Tuesday-Saturday, until September 30th.
September 14th — One Wave Gathering
Following the media exhibition will be our signature public event the One Wave Gathering, Saturday, September 14th from 12pm-6pm, celebrating Pacific arts and culture at Centennial Square by the City of Victoria Hall. We'll be celebrating with a day full of Indigenous presentations, Pacific art and art vendors, NGO partners, and food. Visitors are welcome to explore interactive displays, educational activities and cultural presentations.
We are looking for volunteers to fill roles before and throughout our two week One Wave celebration.
Prior to the events, we're seeking office support, drivers (with their own vehicle) who can help with pickups and drop-offs, poster and flier help, and other general support.
For the opening ceremony (Sept 12) and at the media exhibit (Sept 12-30), we'll need support with set up, greeting and community care, information support, and media/tech support.
On the 14th, we'll be looking for the usual festival-type support- set up and take down, tech support and backstage support, greeters, community care and elder hosting, volunteer and performer check-in, information booth support, green team and waste support, and more.
Volunteering with us is an amazing opportunity to gain experience, meet new people, and have fun. As our, One Wave Gathering volunteers are an essential part of our community and the One Wave event, we ask that all volunteers participate in a unique volunteer training, that will be held for at the PPP office, located at #407 620 View St, Victoria BC on Thursday, September 5th (6:00 - 7:00 pm) or Saturday, September 7th (2:00 - 3:30 pm). Our volunteer orientation will include the basics of what your volunteer roles will be and what to expect, but will also include specific cultural training. This exciting learning opportunity for our volunteers supports the One Wave Gathering vision of knowledge sharing, healing and celebration.
We encourage peoples of all abilities and identifications to volunteer.
