This year, we will celebrate our 11th One Wave with the theme of "navigating our shared waters". Hosted on Lekwungen territory, this year's celebration will begin on September 1st, followed by two weeks of arts events and culminating with One Wave Gathering on September 15th at Centennial Square.
September 1st — One Wave Opening Ceremony and Exhibition
This year our opening ceremony will take place on September 1st at MediaNet’s FLUX Gallery in the form of an artistic exhibition. We will be honouring the legacy of the incredible gathering that took place last year for One Wave’s 10th anniversary. The gallery will feature video works and other media installations celebrating the historic One Wave Gathering anniversary as well as Pacific culture and history.
Also at the gallery will be screenings of the Vaka-Taumako Project We, the Voyagers, followed by a discussion of the project with group representatives. Through this exhibition we hope to foster a space that welcomes dialogue, as well as celebrates Pacific culture. After the opening of the exhibition, the gallery space will be open from 12pm-5pm, Tuesday-Saturday, until September 22nd.
September 15th — One Wave Gathering
Following the media exhibition will be our One Wave Gathering, Saturday, September 15th from 12pm-5pm, celebrating pacific arts and culture at Centennial Square. A day full of Indigenous presentations, Pacific art and art vendors, NGO partners, and food centered around navigating our shared waters of the Pacific. Visitors are welcome to explore interactive displays, educational activities and cultural presentations.
We are looking for volunteers to fill roles prior to and throughout our two week One Wave celebration.
Prior to the events, we're seeking office support, drivers (with their own vehicle) who can help with pick ups and drop offs, poster and flier help, and other general support.
For the opening ceremony (Sept 1) and at the media exhibit (Sept 1-22), we'll need support with set up, greeting and community care, information support, and media / tech support.
On the 15th, we'll be looking for the usual festival support- set up and take down, tech support and backstage support, greeters, community care and elder hosting, volunteer and performer check in, information booth support, green team and waste support, and more.
Volunteering with us is an amazing opportunity to gain experience, meet new people, and have fun. As our One Wave Gathering volunteers are an essential part of our community and the One Wave event, we ask that all volunteers participate in a unique volunteer training, that will be held on Thursday September 6th at 6pm at MediaNet's FLUX Gallery, 821 Fort Street. Our volunteer orientation will include the basics of what your volunteer roles will be and what to expect, but will also include specific cultural training. This exciting learning opportunity for our volunteers supports the Gathering's vision of knowledge sharing, healing and celebration.
We encourage peoples of all abilities and identifications to volunteer.
