We are members of the NYU community, and we stand with Contract Faculty United - UAW in their fight for a fair contract. Contract faculty are half of NYU’s full-time professors. Like tenured and tenure-track faculty, contract faculty hold a wide range of teaching, research, and administrative roles. However, contract faculty do not have the job security that comes with tenure, and they usually teach more (over 130,000 students each year) and earn 36% less on average than their tenured colleagues.
Contract faculty are essential to NYU's mission “to be a top quality international center of scholarship, teaching and research." Their working conditions are students’ learning conditions, and they deserve a fair contract that strengthens academic freedom and makes NYU a better place to work and learn.
We are disappointed that thus far, the NYU administration has refused to compromise. We call on President Linda Mills and Provost Gigi Dopico to settle a fair contract immediately, to ensure that our campus is not disrupted by a strike. Should a strike be necessary, we will stand in solidarity with contract faculty.
