Intro Social Justice Leadership Institute: Fall 2025 School Registration Form
Thanks for your interest in attending the Social Justice Leadership Institute! This retreat takes place Saturday and Sunday December 6th - 7th, 2025 at Phillips Academy Andover. 

The Social Justice Leadership Institute (SJLI) is a one-of-a-kind, student-focused leadership development program, highly regarded by past and present partner schools and youth participants, dedicated to offering student leaders an accelerated space of personal, political, and social transformation for racial and social justice. 

SJLI focuses on racial, gender, economic and queer justice, political analysis, personal leadership skills and community transformation tools. This interactive two-day overnight retreat brings together ~50 independent high school student leaders from across New England. Our experienced staff team of organizers and facilitators supports this group to connect, challenge themselves and each other, build stronger relationships and take action together.

By completing this form, your school commits to participating in SJLI. We offer discounted Early Bird registration ($475/student) until October 17th, 2025. Final registration ($525/student) closes November 21st, 2025. Your school's payment is due by December 3rd, 2025.

We will also ask you to add a 30 minute virtual orientation in the fall for the program, date TBD. After receiving this form, we will send you our student registration form to confirm the final names of your attending students. Your student registration forms are due back to us by December 1st, 2025.

Do you commit to meeting the following criteria in your recruitment of student participants? *
This program is designed for students who have prior excitement around racial and social justice work. Interest in the following: political education, popular education, community centered justice practices, building cross racial solidarity, intersectional racial affinity work, ensures that the program to be a good fit for the student. 

Participants must be willing to engage in a race-explicit space that challenges power and privilege based on race, and to reflect on and talk about their experiences of power and privilege based on race. SJLI supports non-Black young people of color and white young people to be accountable around non-Black privilege.

Due to our popular education approach to racial justice learning, including being rooted in the experiences of those most impacted, we strongly recommend that your school's cohort is majority (preferably above 75%) students of color. Further, we encourage a diversity of socioeconomic background, gender, sexual orientation and class year to be considered when arranging your school's cohort. The specific application process your school uses to nominate individual attending students is up to you.

An invoice will be sent to you following your completion of this form. Your school's fee is based on the numbers you provide here.  Please let Tara and Cynthia know as soon as possible if your attendance numbers change after completing this form. Schools are invited to send a minimum of 3 students in your cohort.

Final student registration is due to us by December 1st, 2025. Please keep lines of communication open between the directors, Cynthia Pages and Tara Venkatraman, during this time as this supports to do our best to accommodate you. 
Do you plan for participants to stay overnight? *
Students must provide their own sleeping materials (pillow, sleeping bag, sleeping mat) while Phillips Academy Andover will provide on-site sleeping space with breakout areas separated by self-identified gender. Meals will be provided on-site starting with Saturday breakfast snacks, lunch and dinner, followed by Sunday breakfast and lunch. Schools electing to skip the overnight are expected to stay at Phillips Academy Andover through 9PM Saturday evening and return to campus by 9AM Sunday morning.
Do you agree to the following chaperone policy? *
Chaperones are required for Saturday morning drop-off, Sunday afternoon pick-up, and to be on call for emergencies. Chaperones who wish to stay on campus during the program will be provided with a designated space to hang out, read, work, nap, etc. After you complete this form, we will ask you to provide emergency contact information (full name and cell phone number) for your school's chaperone. Chaperones are welcome to leave campus during the program, should they wish to do so, but will be asked to stay in the local area in case of emergency. Chaperones are responsible for arranging their own Saturday night accommodations. (Students spend Saturday night in sleeping bags on the auditorium floor)

Do you agree to the following cancellation policy? *

Cancellation Policy: 

Should your school cohort no longer be able to attend SJLI, the following cancellation policy applies:

- Cancellation notice given before November 7th, 2025 incurs no fee. 

- Cancellation notice given between November 7th and November 21st incurs a 50% fee. If requested, this fee can be held by TCS to apply as credit towards participants at a future SJLI)

- Cancellation after November 21st incurs 100% of the invoiced fee. If requested, this fee can be held by TCS to apply as credit towards participants at a future SJLI.

This policy is in place given that our facilitation team is hired based on the number of youth we have registered to attend, so our costs are based on registration. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to us.

Late Invoice Policy: Should your school payment not be received by February 16th, 2025, and no further communication has been received by February 21, 2025, The City School reserves the right to add an additional 20% of the total invoice as a late fee charge.

School Partnership Expectations *

We understand school partnership can include the support of multiple people. For the safety of all students, staff, and smooth conduction of our program we expect school partnerships to provide clarity and contact information for the following parties: school point of contact for invoicing, point of contact for student recruitment (if different), and on-site chaperone for the SJLI retreat (if different). 

  1. School points of contact agree to attend an SJLI orientation which will overview our approach to justice, program expectations, partner responsibilities, and identifying students who are a good fit. 
  2. Chaperones are required to be present for Saturday morning arrival / student registration and Sunday early evening student departure, and to be on call for emergencies. Chaperones who wish to stay on campus during the program will be provided with a designated space to work, etc. Schools are expected to provide emergency contact information (full name and cell phone number) for your school's chaperone in this form. Note: Chaperones are welcome to leave campus during the program, should they wish to do so, but will be asked to stay on call in case of emergency.
  3. Student recruiters are expected to adhere to our student registration expectations including identifying students who are good fits (see above criteria).
