HCAP is a collaborative initiative supported by Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Northwest AHEC, University of Louisville's Health Sciences and Learning for Life Program.
Health Careers Adventure Program
The Health Careers Adventure Program (HCAP) is an interactive year round program to encourage student interest in the exciting filed of health careers. HCAP fosters an interest in health careers and personal achievement by providing math and science enrichment, learning and survival skill building and leadership development. Participants gain exposure to a variety of health careers including medicine, nursing, dentistry, and other allied health professions. Students receive information concerning diploma, certificate, and degree programs.
HCAP also allows participants an opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills by participating in a variety of activities to nurture their interest in health careers. Once admitted to HCAP, participants are encouraged to attend monthly HCAP meetings and "Healthwise." Students will be tracked throughout middle school, high school and college.
"Healthwise" is a summer academic enrichment program offering classes in mathematics, anatomy, biology, chemistry and reading and writing. In addition, student receive extensive exposure to numerous health professionals, through presentations/demonstrations and tours of the health sciences center and other local healthcare facilities. Furthermore, students will go on field trips to various universities throughout Kentucky for campus tours and exploration into those schools healthcare programs.
Healthwise will be from June 13, 2024 to July 3, 2024 at 8:30 AM - 2:30 PM and will be
hosted by Grace M. James Academy of Excellence located at 1615 W. Broadway.
Eligibility: HCAP is designed for middle and high schools students entering grades 6th through 12th. Priority is given to students who meeting the following criteria:
1) Students who reside within West Louisville boundaries
2) Underrepresented minority students
3) Low Income students (students that participate in free or reduced lunch)
4) Would be First-generation college students
Applicants must be in good standing within their school.
Cost of Participation: A cost of $25.00 to cover insurance and administrative cost for one calendar year is required of each student accepted to the Health Careers Adventure Program. If there are concerns about the $25.00 please contact Bradley Coffman at bcoffman@pdchc.org.
Applications must be completed and include the following:
1) A completed application form
2) Your written statement of purpose (minimum of 100 words)
3) A copy of your school grades/report card
4) Your parent or guardian's consent/signature
5) Two (2) letters of recommendation
6) Application Fee
Your grades and letters of recommendation can be sent to bcoffman@fhclouisville.org or turned into our office located in Portland Family Health Center. Fees can be paid at the office, by sending in a check written out to Northwest AHEC, or on the first day of participation in the program.
