Be a Part of Our Village

    Who We Are:

Ten Thousand Villages offers a unique assortment of handmade home decor, art, jewelry, personal accessories and other global treasures that represents the diverse cultures of more than 35 developing countries. Authentic and ethical, our products preserve traditional skills and represent stories of hope for the artisans crafting them. As a nonprofit, fair trade retail organization, Ten Thousand Villages invests in dignity, sustainability, education and hope for people around the world. The mission of the store is to create opportunities for artisans in developing countries to earn income by bringing their products and stories to our markets through long-term fair trading relationships. The hope is that one day all artisans will earn a fair wage, be treated with dignity and respect and be able to live a life of quality. Ten Thousand Villages has been working with artisans in developing counties by selling their unique handicrafts since 1946.

    Why We Love Volunteers:

The success of Ten Thousand Villages largely depends on the commitment and enthusiasm of volunteers. Volunteers are crucial to our mission and operation. Ten Thousand Villages in Cincinnati depends on volunteers to help the manager and assistant managers with the daily operation of the store. Often the store is staffed with one paid staff and one or most volunteers, which reduces operational costs and enables more investment in the artisans we serve. Each volunteer brings special strengths and insights to the operation of the store. This will be a rewarding experience for all who participate!

What is expected of you as a volunteer?

Since we rely on volunteers as substitutes for Sales Associates, we will train you to perform many of the same duties. On the sales floor, as a volunteer, you need to be comfortable greeting customers, telling them the stories of the artisans behind the products, and operating the cash register. You might also be asked to restock the inventory, straighten or rearrange the displays, or do inventory counts. If you are not comfortable doing this, there are some opportunities behind the scenes such as assisting with the unpacking of merchandise, cleaning, recycling, etc. Volunteers are asked to commit to working a minimum of 8 hours a month. This is the amount of time it takes to stay familiar with the store and its procedures and to make up the time in the month before and after. Volunteer shifts are typically 2-4 hours at a time and volunteers can sign up for shifts that that work with their schedule using an online system called Volunteerspot.
