2018-2019 CIES Study Abroad and International Students SIG ----Call for Award Nominations -
The CIES Study Abroad and International Students SIG hereby announces the inaugural Call for Award Nominations that honors publications and individuals whose academic work focuses on study abroad and/or international students. Five categories will be honored during the CIES 2019 Annual Conference in San Francisco, California: 1) Best Article Award, 2) Best Book Award, 3) Best Dissertation Award, 4) Early Career/Practitioner Award and, 5) Lifetime Achievement Award. The 2018-2019 CIES Study Abroad and International Students SIG Awards Committee will try to ensure the creation of a broad selection of recipients that speaks to the diversity and inclusion of the CIES membership in terms of geography, institution, gender, and race/ethnicity.

All CIES members are invited to make nominations. Self-nominations are also welcome. Nominations should be made with the prior approval of the candidate and should include basic background information about why you believe that the nominee is worthy of an award.

Please send requests for nominations and all nomination packages to Roy Y. Chan, Chair of the SIG Awards Committee at rychan@indiana.edu by September 15, 2018. Award recipients will be announced in January 2019 and will be awarded during the CIES Annual Conference in April 2019.

Best Article Award nominees must meet the following criteria:

1. Eligible articles are published between January 1, 2017 and June 1, 2018.
2. Articles written by members of the CIES Study Abroad and International Students-SIG will be given preference; however, articles by CIES members who are not members of the SIG and non-CIES members will be considered.
3. Articles must be published in English in a peer-review paper/electronic journal that has been recognized by the CER Bibliography.
4. Nominated articles must focus on study abroad and/or international students’ issues.
5. Articles can be of a conceptual or empirical nature, from any research paradigm that provides a unique contribution to developing scholarship in the field of international and comparative education and should show originality and rigor.

Best Book Award nominees must meet the following criteria:

1. Eligible books are published between January 1, 2017 to June 1, 2018.
2. Books written by members of the CIES Study Abroad and International Students -SIG will be given preference; however, books by CIES members who are not members of the SIG and non-CIES members will be considered.
3. Books must be published in English.
4. Nominated books or edited volumes must focus on study abroad and/or international students’ issues.
5. Books can be of a conceptual or empirical nature, from any research paradigm that provides a unique contribution to developing scholarship in the field of international and comparative education and show originality and rigor.
6. The nominee should arrange for the publisher to send copies of the book to each of the book awards subcommittee members.

Best Dissertation Award nominees must meet the following criteria:

1. Eligible dissertations must be completed between January 1, 2017 to June 1, 2018, with the student achieving doctoral candidacy status in an Ed.D., D.B.A., or Ph.D. program.
2. Eligible nominees do not have to be a member of CIES, nor enrolled in a CIES international and comparative education doctoral program.
3. Dissertations must be written in English.
4. Nominated dissertations must focus on study abroad and/or international student issues.
5. Dissertation can be of a conceptual or empirical nature, from any research paradigm that provides a unique contribution to developing scholarship in the field of international and comparative education and show originality and rigor.
6. It is preferred that all nominees who make the final cut submit a paper based on their dissertation for the upcoming CIES national or regional conference.
7. Nomination can be made by a) the student; b) a CIES member; c) a doctoral committee chair (even if that chair is not a member of CIES).
8. Dissertations submitted to other CIES award categories are ineligible.

Early Career/Practitioner Award nominees must meet the following criteria:

1. Eligible person must be a member of CIES, with a minimum of two years and maximum of five years in a postgraduate capacity.
2. Person must be a member of the Study Abroad and International Students SIG.
3. Person must show evidence of regular presentation on international and comparative education at CIES regional, national and/or international meetings.
4. Person must have a history of work in the field of domestic or international education that spans a minimum of two years. This can be at any post-secondary institution, NGO, or other position that supports international and comparative education.
5. Person must have some publications and work in the field of international and comparative education.

Lifetime Achievement Award nominees must meet the following criteria:

1. Eligible person must be a long-time member of CIES (10+ years), with a minimum of ten years in a postgraduate capacity.
2. Person must be a member of the Study Abroad and International Students SIG.
3. Person must show evidence of regular presentation on international and comparative education at CIES regional, national or international meetings.
4. Person must have a history of work in the field of domestic or international higher education that spans a minimum of 15 years. This can be at any post-secondary institution, NGO, or other position that supports international higher education.
5. Person must have a history of publications and work in the field of international and comparative education.
