According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), obesity is associated with the leading causes of death in the United States, including diabetes, heart disease, stroke and, some types of cancer. Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend adults do at least 150 minutes a week of moderate intensity activity such as brisk walking.
This year, the Howard County Local Health Improvement Coalition (HCLHIC) is working with local partners to organize HoCo Walktober 2022. Walk Maryland Day is a celebration of our State's official exercise and a call to action to promote walking for physical activity and improved health. As we plan for HoCo Walktober 2022 events, we look forward to engaging with partners and community members to encourage walking/moving for residents of all ages and abilities.
The proposed outcomes for HoCo Walktober 2022 are:
1. Month-long Calendar of events in October (indoors, out doors, virtual, others accessible for all residents).
2. Increased participation and promotion of physical activity for improved physical and mental health.
