Vision Towards Success Student Questionnaire Work-Ready Skills for Blind Teens & Young Adults

Welcome, we are so excited to work with you  on The Vision Towards Success (VTS) internship ! It is designed to help you explore careers, develop professional skills, and make a meaningful impact in the blind community. Throughout the internship, you'll work as part of a team in a supportive, professional environment while creating resources that inspire others.

Our Four Goals

By the end of the program, we hope every participant will:

  1. Successfully complete the internship. This is achieved by  attending and actively participating in 14 full group meetings  and 28 Team meetings,  developing your career pathway plan, preparing for and conducting at least 1 career interview, developping an elavator pitch, resume, cover letter and participating in a mock job interview. Other deliverables include  producing 1 finished podcast, Written Profile or teasers   as assigned by your team Supervisor.
  2. Explore careers and discover new possibilities. Through research,  conducting and attending interviews, , you may learn about careers you never knew existed or gain a deeper understanding of careers that already interest you.
  3. Develop workplace skills. You'll gain experience working in a professional environment by communicating with teammates, meeting deadlines, participating in meetings, completing assignments, and collaborating to achieve shared goals.
  4. Personal goals

Outside of the team goals, we will help you identify and work on personal goals related to work readiness and career development

Working as a Team

Each team plays an important role in the success of the program. Whether you're on the Audio Team, Writing Team, or Research and Outreach Team, your work supports your teammates and contributes to the final products we create together.

The Research & Outreach Team is where connections begin. You’ll research and connect with inspiring professionals from the blind community, conduct outreach by email and phone, schedule interviews, gather information, and use spreadsheets to track progress toward the team goal of securing at least one career interview for every student, including you. You’ll also help promote guests’ stories through short promotional teasers for podcasts and written profiles. Along the way, you’ll build transferable skills in professional communication, networking, research, data collection, organization, scheduling, teamwork, time management, problem-solving, adaptability, and project management. You’ll then apply those skills to your own future by developing an elevator pitch, resume, cover letter, Career Pathway Plan, and completing a mock job interview. You won’t just learn how to find and connect with opportunities for the team—you’ll learn how to find and pursue opportunities for yourself.

The Audio Team works with the Research & Outreach Team to identify, research, and interview professionals from the blind community for a podcast featured on the Polus Center website. You’ll learn the complete podcast production process, including interview preparation, recording, audio editing in Reaper, scriptwriting, voiceovers, music selection, storytelling, and post-production. Along the way, you’ll build transferable workplace skills in professional communication, teamwork, active listening, demonstrating leadership and initiative, , time management, problem-solving, meeting deadlines, and  responding to feedback. By the end of the program, you’ll have produced a finished podcast that demonstrates your technical, creative, and professional skills.

Writing Team participants turn real conversations into compelling career stories while developing skills they can use in any workplace. Working with the Research and Outreach Team, participants research career paths, develop questions related to their career goals, and prepare for and conduct professional interviews. You will learn the key elements of feature writing including how to create an engaging narrative, identify key themes, incorporate quotes, and use storytelling techniques to transform an interview into a polished career spotlight. You will strengthen Your writing through peer review, professional feedback, and revision while developing transferable skills in research, critical thinking, leadership and initiative, teamwork, professional communication, time management, self-advocacy, and assistive technology. Completed profiles will be featured on our website, allowing others to learn from the careers and experiences they helped bring to life.

During the internship, you'll practice skills that employers value, including: Teamwork, Professional communication, Time management, Organization, Meeting deadlines, Problem-solving, Project  management and taking initiative.

No workplace is perfect, and neither is this internship. Sometimes you'll need to adapt, ask questions, solve problems, or help your teammates overcome challenges. These experiences are an important part of learning how to work successfully with others.

Making a Difference

The work you complete during this internship has a purpose beyond the classroom. Your interviews, podcasts, and written profiles help educate, encourage, and inspire blind and visually impaired people around the world by highlighting professionals working in a wide variety of careers.

Your Responsibilities

Between meetings, you'll complete assignments and make progress on your team's projects. Please come to each meeting prepared to share your progress, ask questions, and collaborate with your teammates. Completing your work between meetings allows us to spend more time learning new skills and less time catching up.

Throughout the internship, you'll use your phone and email regularly to communicate with program staff, teammates, and, in some cases, interview guests. Because the Vision Towards Success (VTS) program moves quickly, all participants are expected to manage their own email and phone communications. This includes checking and responding to emails, voicemails, phone calls, and text messages promptly—within 24 hours at the latest.

We hope you will find this to be an exciting and rewarding challenge. If you still have questions, please ask us to clarify. We want you to succeed.

Team Overview and Selection

Each team consists of 4–5 participants. Team assignments are based on your interests, strengths, and availability. While we can't guarantee you'll be placed on your first-choice team, we'll carefully consider your preferences when making assignments to create the best experience for everyone.

What all Teams Teach: Our Three teams build transferable skills in professional communication, collaboration, networking, research, data collection, organization, teamwork, time management, problem-solving, adaptability, accountability, initiative, and project management. But this internship isn't only for participants who are interested in Music, Writing or business. Producing a podcast, writing a feature article, or generating interview leads and making connections requires many of the same skills employers look for in every career: learning new technology, solving problems, communicating professionally, listening carefully, managing deadlines, accepting feedback, making decisions, working with others, and taking a project from beginning to end.

Over the course of this internship, you’ll explore careers that interest you, research professionals from the blind community, develop interview questions related to your career goals, and interview someone who can answer your questions to help you decide what’s next.

You'll also develop the tools you'll need beyond VTS. You'll create a Career Pathway Plan, elevator pitch, resume, and cover letter, participate in a mock job interview, and learn how to explain your new skills and experience to an employer

Now that you know the basics, here is an overview of each team and what makes them unique..

The research and Outreach team: Want to learn how to find opportunities instead of waiting for them to find you? On the Research & Outreach Team, you’ll connect with professionals from the blind community, explore careers you may never have considered, and build the same skills you’ll need to network, research employers, and pursue future jobs. You’ll research potential guests, make professional phone calls, write outreach emails, schedule and conduct interviews, manage information using spreadsheets, create promotional content, and work with teammates to meet real deadlines and goals. If you want to become more confident talking to professionals, learn how to build a professional network, discover career possibilities, and get better at finding and pursuing opportunities for yourself, the Research & Outreach Team gives you the chance to practice those skills now, before you need them to land your next internship or job.

Audio Team: Why spend 14 weeks on the Audio Team? Because you won't just learn about podcasting—you'll actually produce one.  You'll learn how to record and edit audio in Reaper, work with single- and multitrack recordings, choose the strongest parts of an interview, write and record voiceovers, add music, adjust audio levels, assemble a complete episode, and create a transcript. By the end of 14 weeks, you won't just be able to say, “I learned about audio production.” You'll be able to say, “I researched and interviewed a professional, learned professional audio-production software, solved technical problems, managed a long-term project, responded to feedback, and produced a finished podcast.”

The Writing Team: If you want to become better at taking ideas and information and turning them into something other people can understand, remember, and act on, the Writing Team gives you 14 weeks to practice clear written communication which is useful in any career. You’ll learn how to understand and communicate someone’s story clearly and respectfully through writing, taking everything you learned from your interview and turning it into a polished career spotlight that can be featured on our website.  Our feature writing framework will teach you to find the most important information in an interview, identify a strong theme, write an opening that makes someone want to keep reading, use quotes effectively, describe powerful moments, organize information, and revise your work until it is ready for a real audience.

Use these team overviews to think about what your preferences are and make your selections.
