Beckham Smith Scholarship

My grandmothers, Myrtle Beckham and Janie Mae Smith, were women of faith who defined strength throughout their lives.

Myrtle Beckham was born on August 21, 1918 and lived in Central Texas all of her life. She was a graduate of Austin High School where she met her husband, Melvin Beckham. They lived in Austin where they raised five children together near her beloved sisters. Janie Mae Smith was born on July 4, 1920 and lived in Pumpkintown, South Carolina. She had an 8th grade education and worked in the manufacturing mills while she raised four children with her husband, Harvey 'Red' Smith.

These two women had a profound impact on my life. Each came about it from their own perspective, but knew that hard work and perseverance made the difference in their lives. Both reinforced that education was the great equalizer, and that I should get "all of the education that I could". Myrtle would often remind me that my generation would be the first one that really felt the difference of the women's rights movement - so it was up to us to keep moving forward and take every opportunity that I could.

The Beckham Smith Scholarship has been created to keep their dream alive by helping students who plan to further their education after high school.
