Parent helpers for Years 3 and 4 guided reading
Last year, we introduced a very successful initiative known as Guided Reading to support the development of reading skills and enjoyment of reading within Years 3 and 4. We had a wonderful team of volunteer parents who helped with this and we are now looking to supplement them with more fantastic helpers.
In brief, Guided Reading involves a small group of children (five or so) reading a book together, with an adult alongside them who supports comprehension and enjoyment by talking about the content with the children, asking pertinent questions, helping with some pronunciations and even doing some of the reading too.
If being involved in this appeals to you and you would be able to commit every Monday afternoon to either two back to back sessions (3pm to 3.35pm followed by 3.35pm to 4.10pm) or just one session (3.35pm to 4.10pm), please complete the following short electronic form by 5pm on Tuesday 12th September.
Helpers will work with the same group of boys across the year, building up really positive and supportive relationships. There is no need for a helper to be a parent of a boy in Year 3 or Year 4, but if a helper does have a son in either of those two year groups then they will not work with boys from their son's year group.
We will provide information and training to helpers in order to help them fulfil the role confidently. There will always be a teacher on hand to support volunteers.
Volunteers will be required to undergo a DBS check and fill out a brief application form. The school's Human Resources team will guide volunteers through the process and cover any associated costs. In line with school policy, volunteers will also have to attend a short session on Safeguarding.
Any help with this initiative, which we know benefits the boys enormously and which we believe helpers really enjoy too, would be hugely appreciated.
