At the VC Forum on 10th October, Sonia from the Faculty of Education publicly accused the Hong Kong Police Force of subjecting her and others to brutal violence and sexual assault at various police facilities. Shocked, angry and heart-broken, we extend our unwavering support to Sonia.
In the last few months, we have witnessed on the streets and on live broadcast how police refuse to show their warrant cards in executing their duties, use unnecessary and excessive violence, as well as humiliating and degrading means to attack and arrest protestors, ordinary citizens, and journalists. We strongly condemn the blatant disregard for the law and discipline of the Hong Kong Police.
It takes exceptional courage for Sonia to make public her experiences of sexual assault and brutal violence at the hands of the police. In fact, other arrestees and their lawyers have stated very similar experiences of ill treatment and violence during detention. We call on the Hong Kong government to immediately set up an Independent Commission of Inquiry to look into police abuse of power, sexual violence, and brutality. This is the only way to restore justice. We demand the truth.
It breaks our heart to know that our students have suffered from such cruel treatment. CUHK is a home for our students. As CUHKers of the University, we are determined to stand by you during this difficult time, and give you all the support you need.
We urge Vice Chancellor Rocky Tuan and the senior management to fulfill the distinct moral responsibility of a university. It is our duty to take a firm stand against injustice, to attend to the needs of our students, and to provide them with care and support.
Sonia, you are not alone. We stand with you in the pursuit of justice.
