Reference Letter Request
If you need a reference letter, ask several weeks in advance. Start compiling information for reference letters. When noting deadlines for colleges and scholarships, pay careful attention to when letters are actually due. Writing a reference letter that shows your individuality is not a fast process.

Reference letters can be very helpful in explaining grades that are anomalies or family situations that may have adversely impacted your grades or life. Reference letters have the potential to make a difference when committees are reviewing applications. The more information you provide will result in a recommendation letter that does not sound generic or canned and that will make your application look even better.

Do not assume that the counselor or your teachers know all the details about your roles in the school, community or about your character or history. If in doubt, please write it down in this form. We cannot include these details in your letter if you do not mention it.
