HRCA Virtual Chess Center 2020-2021 Winter/Spring Class and Program Registration
START HERE: Please read program and course descriptions carefully (including fees) and jot down your selections before filling out this form. Descriptions are available on our website at
THEN: Use this form to register for classes and programs for the remainder of the 2020-2021season. All classes will be taught online via Zoom for the duration of the season. All other programs will take place on an online chess platform until further notice.
Please note that Hampton Roads Scholastic Chess Club (HRSCC) is by invitation only due to limited capacity when we return to competition in person. You may register for it here, but indicate that you'd like to be wait listed to be considered for entry.
Candidate Masters, Rising Tides, and The Nimzowitsch System require Coach approval. You may register here, but if not already approved, registration is not guaranteed.
All other programs and classes are guaranteed enrollment except in cases with extremely low registrations (usually fewer than 5 students).
All classes / programs are for youth in grades Pre-K-12 only except where indicated otherwise.
You will NOT choose a particular level for a curriculum with multiple levels. When we receive your registration, you will be assessed for placement into the proper level of that curriculum.
You must complete a separate registration form for each student in your family.
Student's Full Name
Student's AY20-21 Grade (or choose Adult)
Pre-K (age 3)
Pre-K (age 4)
Student's School (AY20-21) -- Make a note if you are temporarily officially homeschooling (not virtual public school) until schools return in person, then list the school you will return to. If you homeschool, also indicate any co-ops you attend, if any. Type NA if you are an adult, or list your college if a student.
Are you already an HRCA member? If No, don't worry -- an annual membership is only $5-10 depending on your program. If you're not sure, it's okay -- we will verify all registrations with our membership roster anyway. We will include the additional fee on your invoice if required.
I'm Not Sure
This section is for our Tuesday night competition clubs. Youth registering for HRSCC must also register for training in the next section. HRSCC membership requires director approval (when students are ready to compete). Nobody is required to register for the competition clubs. If you register for HRCC (adults / advanced youth), it's simply an expression of interest, and we'll add you to all communications regarding upcoming club events. HRCC ("adult club") is expected to return to over-the-board play in September, under strict COVID protocols. I would like to register for a competition club:
Hampton Roads Scholastic Chess Club (Invitation Issued / Returning Member)
Hampton Roads Scholastic Chess Club (Wait List / When Ready)
Hampton Roads Chess Club (Adults and Advanced Youth)
None of the Above - I am not interested in competition at this time.
This section is to register for training classes. Selection of at least one class totaling 20 hours is mandatory if you selected HRSCC above. All classes are open to the public (you may train and not compete!). Please see our website for class schedules and prices before making your selections. I would like to register for the following class(es):
Story Time Chess Session 2 - Morning (Ages 3-6 / Pre-K thru 1st only)
Story Time Chess Session 2 - Evening (Ages 3-6 / Pre-K thru 1st only)
Think Like a King Session 2
Coach Jay's Winter Chess Academy
Coach Jay's Spring Chess Academy

HRCA partners with ChessKid.com to bring steeply discounted Gold (premium / full access) accounts to our members. These accounts run $50/year retail but are only $15 through HRCA. We strongly recommend ChessKid as a supplement to any other program your child is taking with us, as there are video lessons, tests, puzzles (SO important!), live games with other kids (in a 100% safe environment), computer workouts, articles, and more. Please indicate if you would like to also purchase a ChessKid Gold account if it is not already included in your program (no worries if you are not sure about that -- we know which programs include ChessKid). NEW!!!! -- See our website for information on the new ChessKid Club, which includes the account AND an awards incentive package for motivation and goal setting. Check all that apply.
YES, I want to join the ChessKid Club with both the account and the awards package.
YES, I want ChessKid Gold for $15 a year but not the club / awards package.

The price of each class and program is included on our website. Please review those fees and calculate your family's total payment before answering this question. We are a 501(c)(3) with prices as much as 80% lower than for-profit chess programs in the US. Please note that payments made with services rendered are not tax deductible. Additional donations welcome (and tax deductible!). Indicate your preference for payment of fees here. You will be invoiced according to your preference. Needs-based scholarships are available.
I would like a 5% discount for paying all fees in full at the start of my classes or programs.
I would like to make equal monthly payments spread across the duration of my programs or classes.
NA -- I am only choosing free options.
I would like to speak with someone about a needs-based scholarship.
I am interested in making a donation. Please contact me.
Joining HRCA and participating in our programs gains you access to our exclusive private chess server for game play! If you are registering more than one child for our programs, you will need a unique e-mail address for each student's account. This may mean creating new e-mail addresses just for this purpose. Please indicate what e-mail address you would like associated with THIS student's private server account.
Please use this space to tell us any other information we need to know, such as any chess background the student may have (if you are not already known to HRCA), US Chess ID and rating if applicable, any accommodations you may require, etc. If you already have a ChessKid account, provide the username here.
