Petition to Minister Freeland - September 2023

Dear Minister Freeland:                     

We have heard that you are the voice in the Liberal Cabinet that is blocking the measures that are necessary for Canada to meet our domestic and international climate targets. This petition from concerned Canadians supporting Fridays for Future Ottawa is asking you to take a strong and public position on two issues:

1.    Place a hard cap on emissions and have mechanisms to ensure ongoing accountability of oil and gas companies. We want to see emissions reduced by 60% below 2005 levels by 2030. We need to ensure that emissions from extracting oil and gas are reduced as well as emissions from burning oil and gas.

2.    Roll back fossil fuel subsidies and preferential financial treatment of fossil fuel companies. Instead implement measures that enforce the polluter pays principle and hold oil and gas companies to account for the damages they are causing to Canadians, Indigenous peoples, the land and our future.

We ask you to use your leadership, capacity and privilege as our Minister of Finance and Deputy Prime Minister to help guide the Canadian economy in our inevitable transition away from fossil fuels.
