Please sign the petition below to the Turkish Embassy or Consulate in your country requesting an end to the bombings and ensure civilian protection in Iraqi Kurdistan. Your signature matters!!
Turkish military shelling and bombardments are now happening daily along the Iraq border with Turkey. Turkish soldiers have crossed far into Iraqi Kurdistan and are building bases as far as 30km over the border claiming to be ridding the area of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The conflict between the Turkish government and the PKK has spanned over 30 years.
This heavy increase in violence has been causing mass displacement of civilian villages and loss of life. Civilians caught within the cross-border conflict have sustained heavy casualties, deaths of their relatives, damages to property, loss of livelihoods, as well as lasting trauma effects.
Interviews with survivors of these bombings say, "We think Turkey is targeting the Kurds in general, old and young, men and women.... They don't care." And "What is my crime? Is it my fault I was born a Kurd?"
The Turkish military have even been known to intimidate civilian witnesses after an attack and conceal evidence. They have also gone so far as to confiscate video evidence taken by local witnesses.
I would like to ask you to take action by:
1. Contacting the pertinent offices of the Government of Turkey to request an end to bombings in Iraqi-Kurdistan.2. Ensuring protection of the civilian population in Northern Iraq.
Turkish attacks on Kurdish civilian populations are inexcusable, in violation of international law. Turkey is violating United Nations General Assembly’s resolution 217A of the Declaration of Human Rights of 1948, against the Kurdish people, largely through the 3rd and 12th articles, which are as follows:
Article 3: Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.
Article 12: No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with [their] privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon [their] honor and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks.
Such attacks by Turkey against Kurdish peoples also violate the United Nations General Assembly resolution 44/25 Convention on the Rights of the Child of 1989 through at least the following articles:
Article 16: 1. No child shall be subjected to arbitrary or unlawful interference with his or her privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to unlawful attacks on his or her honor and reputation.
Article 38: 1. States Parties undertake to respect and to ensure respect for rules of international humanitarian law applicable to them in armed conflicts which are relevant to the child.
