UN 2023 Water Conference Virtual Side-Event
Theme: Operationalizing water and climate youth Demands: Strategy and way forward for implementation of the Water Action Agenda

Day: 25th March (Saturday)

Time: 10h00 - 11h30 EDT (Eastern Daylight Time)

Duration: 90min

Context:

Youth and future generations will be the most affected by the effects of climate change, at the same time that youth are recognized globally as agents of change, acting from national to global level through policy discourse and climate spaces such as Conferences of Youth (COYs) and Conferences of Parties (COPs) and national climate and water youth conferences producing recommendation letters and statements.

However, now is the time to move ahead of the talks and think about ways to operationalize these youth demands and statements with meaningful youth engagement and inclusion in the water and climate decision-making space.

About the event:

This event will conduce you to reflect about the need and strategies crucial for the operationalization of the overarching water and climate youth demands guided by Article 6 of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and Article 12 of the Paris Agreement i.e. Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE). It will also highlight the stakeholder-specific recommendations, collected by the official youth constituency of the UNFCCC in consultation with youth globally, and compiled in the form of the Global Youth Statement that has also been submitted to the COP27 Presidency.

Later, you will engage in a quick and dynamic practical exercise to discuss and elaborate short solution concept notes embodying the 6 key elements of ACE (climate change education and public awareness, training, public participation, public access to information, and international cooperation) on these issues in the perspective of the water and climate commitments under the Water Action Agenda.

Expected outcomes: Co-answer to the question “How can we operationalize water and climate youth demands?” through solution concept notes that will be shared to YOUNGO, co-organizers and participants to serve as inspiration for working side-by-side with youth to advance on the water agenda.
