declare myself competent and legitimate, as a human being, to claim Hans Island in my own name and to assert my rights for it to become Terra Nullius, i.e. a stretch of land that no State can possibly claim. The aforementioned claim is based on the enforcement of the following principles: 1. Hans Island is the sole object of this claim. Territorial waters are by no means included and under no circumstances should Canada or Denmark feel endangered in their legitimate sovereignty on waters and territories surrounding Hans Island. 2. Hans Island will need to benefit from the UN-recognized Terra Nullius status – a territory that belongs to no state. This demand will be supported by the largest possible number of nations, in a spirit of good will, far from any claim that could serve the interest of a country at the expense of another. 3. Hans Island is a territory dedicated to humanity, knowledge and collective conscience. It is managed by no one and no one may exert any special rights on it. Any landing on Hans Island shall be motivated by scientific purposes or by universal values. This claim is based on provisions outlined in the following articles: Article 1: - Given the inability of international conferences to lead the world into an environment that is compatible with ecological requirements and the reduction of CO2 emissions; - Given the progressive destruction of our ecosystems, which humanity relies on for its well-being as well as for its survival; - Given the shortage of energy, mining, forest and halieutic resources, and the deterioration of arable lands; - Given the worsening natural disasters which directly result from anthropogenic global warming; - Given the lack of direction and leadership able to lead humanity towards behaviours consistent with maintaining an environment able to meet its needs sustainably, I support Hans Island as a free island forever preserved from any territorial appropriation. Article 2: - Given the inexistence of any territory free from any exterior political power or from any exterior influence or interest; - Given the confusion in human minds, the contradictory and fluctuating nature of political choices, of beliefs and of opinions; - Given the societal breakdown due to the multiplication of individual claims, whether from a person, group or nation; - Given the irresponsibility of many attitudes and practices which now characterise the way humanity treats the Earth; - Given the specific needs of human nature to love, to believe, to hope, and to feel connected to what scientific analysis can’t explain; - Given the need for a vision that transcends political, ethnic, social and cultural boundaries in order to address global issues; - Given the urgency of a unified, determined and responsible action to preserve the natural resources that can still be preserved, I assert that Hans Island belongs to me and to every human being, and that it stands for our collective conscience. By conscience I mean the capacity of discernment and of decision, open-mindedness, thorough analysis, fair sensitivity as well as effective, controlled and enlightened action, in the respect of others and of all things. I authorise the official delegation of the ambassadors of HANS INSULA UNIVERSALIS (www.hansuniversalis.org) to represent me before administrations, jurisdictions and relevant authorities on the status of Hans Island.
