Times are changing: Media outlets all across the country are covering sexual assault on campus at unprecedented rates, helping spur a national conversation around gender-based violence and civil rights.
But dominant media coverage of the issue almost always highlights the experiences of the most privileged survivors -- those who are white, able-bodied, legally documented, cis women, often attending "elite" private colleges on the east or west coasts. In so doing, they perpetuate a long and enduring history of exclusion and erasure, particularly of black and indigenous survivors, other survivors of color, queer and trans survivors, disabled survivors, low-income survivors, survivors living in rural areas of the Midwest and South -- and, especially, survivors living at the intersection of multiple marginalized identities.
We're working to develop a confidential database of survivors interested in talking to the press -- one that works to resist the dominant media storytelling on the issue. If you are a survivor of gender-based violence (including, but not limited to, sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, stalking, sexual harassment, cyber-bullying, etc.) in middle school, high school, or college, please consider adding your name by filling out the form below.
NOTE: This list will not be shared with anyone outside of 3 organizers on the Know Your IX team. It will NOT be shared directly with reporters. Instead, whenever we receive a media request we will email survivors individually to ask if they feel comfortable being introduced to the particular reporter. Only with their consent, will we proceed. Accordingly, please be sure to leave a way for us to get in contact with you below!
Additionally, we hope to organize a series of online media trainings and other support efforts for survivors who sign up below! In the meantime, you can check out some of our tips here:
