Eligibility: The 2019 competition is open to student musicians in grades 6-12 and all orchestral instruments except piano. (Winners of the previous year’s competition are not eligible to enter.)
Repertoire: Check your repertoire first by sending an email to us at MSO.firstname.lastname@example.org. (We'd like to know of your interest and repertoire in advance to make sure we have the appropriate instrumentation to play your piece.)
Deadline: When you are ready with your video audition, submit this form including the link to your video no later than 11:59pm on Sunday, March 10th, 2019. Limit of one video submission per student.
Entry Fee: To help cover the costs of administering the competition and concert, the competition includes a $20 entry fee, accepted via PayPal or a check made out to "MSO, Inc." See instructions in the form below. We waive this fee for any student for whom it poses a barrier to entry.
Results: A panel of judges will review submitted material, and competitors will be notified of the results on or by Monday, April 1st.
Prize: Winners will be invited to perform their piece with the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra at a community concert to be held on Sunday, June 16, 2019. Winners will also receive a $100 scholarship award. The number of winners will be determined by the number and quality of entrants, as well as programming considerations such as repertoire and instrumentation; the panel reserves the right to not select a winner if the level of playing does not make a public performance appropriate.
Winners should plan to join the MSO for at least three evening rehearsals prior to the concert to prepare their pieces with the orchestra. (Regular rehearsals are typically on Mondays; the dress rehearsal will be on Thursday, June 13.)
