About the event
Thirty years on from the groundbreaking Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, feminists, women’s rights advocates, disability rights and LGBTIQ+ activists, governments, and United Nations entities are taking stock of progress over three decades. They are identifying gaps and areas of backsliding, as well as opportunities to further cement and accelerate the gains already made. Progress is undeniable across the 12 critical areas of concern, but it remains too slow, and we are off track to achieve sustainable development goal 5 (SDG5). Pushback is also undeniable. Rights are at risk.
With Beijing+30 in 2025, we can collectively embrace this moment to break through the barriers, to push forward progress, to demonstrate political will, to unleash the power of feminist movements and to shift power and resources to those who need it most and will lead us. It is not a time to be quiet about the challenges or to be hesitant with actions, commitments and resources. It is a time to build bridges and lift one another up by taking an intersectional approach centered in human rights.
Objectives - Celebrate the gender equality gains in 30 years since the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action
- Serve as a platform for Member States to underscore their commitments to achieving gender equality, especially in the face of conflict, climate, pushback and anti-rights forces
- Create a multistakeholder space that facilitates shifting power to people and communities that are often marginalized or ignored, adolescent girls, young people, Indigenous women and girls, LGBTIQ+, and women, girls and gender-diverse people with disabilities
This dynamic and celebratory event will address 30 years of progress on gender equality and rally stakeholders to build on it, bringing renewed momentum in this challenging context. Activists and advocates, including adolescent girls, LGBTIQ+ persons and human rights defenders, will bring the experience and vision that should direct resources and programming. Governments and other entities will share their priorities and plans to accelerate progress while centering those most marginalized.
