2021 Solstice Artist in Residence Application

The Summer Solstice Celebration, is a 501(c)3 non profit arts organization in Santa Barbara, CA with a 47 year tradition of bringing the community together through the arts.

Each year the Summer Solstice Celebration staff and artistic team put on the annual Santa Barbara Summer Solstice parade on State Street and a 3-day art and music festival in Alameda Park. This year because of the pandemic we are being extra creative and putting on a modified version of our regular festivities through out the month of June (instead of the usual 3 day weekend festival format.) There will be no large scale events or gatherings, due to COVID-19 restrictions, but instead a treasure trove of art installations and exhibitions blooming around Santa Barbara for the public to explore and enjoy!

We have a limited number of paid ($500-1500 stipend) Artist in Residence positions available for the 2021 season that we would like to open up to our artistic community. To make a proposal, please read the guidelines and complete the form below.

The selected Artists will create a site specific installation or ensemble between May 1st-30th at the Community Arts Workshop (CAW), or a site of their choosing. The work of art or performance piece will be exhibited at, on, or in front of a business, home or other designated mutually agreed upon location in Santa Barbara for the month of June (or a portion there of) for the public to enjoy!

Details about the work or performance and where to view it will be available on our website and distributed to the community. The work or ensemble created will be professionally filmed as part of documenting the festivities and aired on one or more local television channels tentatively scheduled for June 27th.

The artist will have up to $250 available for supplies and materials on top of the offered stipend amount depending on the proposed project. The Artist may also initiate a "Go Fund Me" campaign to raise additional funds for the project, if desired.

The proposed installation, work of art or ensemble should incorporate the theme "Bloom" into it's design.

The proposed installation, work of art or ensemble should follow and keep in mind Covid-19 safety protocols and be possible within the tiered County of Santa Barbara health and safety guidelines.

The work must be able to be installed by May 31st and be taken down by June 28th.

All items must be removed from the site installation and the CAW completely cleaned by June 30th.
