Put your multilingual skills to use helping immigrants in Massachusetts! Flexible, low-commitment volunteer opportunity with a big impact.
*What is the Williams Translation Project?*
The WTP is a group of 90+ Williams and Amherst community members who provide free translations of legal documents for local immigrant centers. We work with the Berkshire Immigrant Center (BIC) in Pittsfield, MA and the Center for New Americans (CNA) in Northampton, MA, which each send us a translation request about one per week. The most common documents are birth certificates, marriage certificates, diplomas, and drivers licenses; the most common languages are French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Mandarin, German, Romanian, and Vietnamese.
*Who are we looking for?*
To participate, you must be fluent in English and another language, have access to a computer, and an occasional few hours free.
*How does it work?*
Being a part of the WTP means receiving emails for translation requests in your language. If you aren't too busy you can claim the document and translate it within a week. Once you send it back the WTP coordinators and another translator from you language will check for grammar, word choice, layout, and accuracy.
*What is the commitment?*
If you would like to join, we ask that you fill out a confidentiality form, spend fifteen minutes familiarizing yourself with our training materials, and commit to claiming a translation when you are able to. Expect to spend about 2 hours per translation, and to complete a translation infrequently; no more than once a month. You can take yourself off the list at any time if life gets too busy.
Thank you so much for your interest in fulfilling this much-needed service for BIC and CNA!
