OSA Summer Arts Academy
Oakland School for the Arts is excited to offer the following Arts Academies this summer!

OSA 's Summer Arts Academy run daily from  9:00 - 3:00 with an extended-day option available which concludes at 5:00 PM. Academies are led by trained adult educators who are also working artists in each respective field. Registration is open to students between the ages of  9-14 years old.

Each session is a 9 day program that will educate learners of all levels in an engaging hands on arts experience.  

Session One is Tuesday, June 6th- June 16th 
(Tuesday, June 6- Friday, June 9th, Monday, June 12-Friday, June 16th)

Session Two is Tuesday, June 20th-June 30th 
(Tuesday, June 20- Friday, June 23rd, Monday, June 26-Friday, June 30th)

$1150 per 9 day session.

Please note that offerings are subject to enrollment; if the academy is canceled by OSA prior the the start of the session, an alternate session may be taken or refund issued.

Musical Theatre:

This musical theatre course will explore a diversity of rehearsal tools and techniques in pursuit of a dynamic and authentic performance. Students will  strengthen the elements of both musical and dramatic interpretation by bringing together the disciplines of singing, acting, and dancing to create a mini musical.

Visual Media Arts: Starting with traditional art using pencils and watercolor, students will begin to scan their work to bring it into Photoshop and/or Procreate. and use drawing tablets connected to a laptop. At the end of the session, students will go home with a giclee print (inkjet on archival paper) and a pdf zine of the entire class's best work.

Dance Academy: 
Session One: Areas of study will include African Diasporic movement, Hip Hop, pelvic and spine exploration, Pilates for dancers and choreography development. This summer's offering is for young artist looking to become fully aware of their body mechanics and possibilities, as well as training in other forms of dance. 

Session Two: Modern -Development of beginning and intermediate-level skills in Horton dance technique, including alignment, vocabulary, performance, and history, with emphasis on strengthening the body for dance. Class format will include warm-up exercises, fortifications, studies, and traveling combinations. Course also includes the study of Lester Horton’s influence on American modern dance, particularly in relation to integration in concert dance and the formation of Alvin Ailey American Dance
Contemporary-Contemporary dance is an expressive communicator of the mind, body and spirit through movement. The essence of Contemporary dance is to look forward, not backward by fusing multiple techniques. This  class will help express the heart & soul through structured exercises that condition the body via coordination ,strength & flexibility. Dancers will increase their stamina by working on tone and texture of movement, musicality , speed , efficiency, getting in and out of the floor and general floor-work. 


Alternative Fashion Design: This is a two-week workshop for young designers to learn sewing techniques to transform existing garments into something alternative and original. Focus on sustainability practices and creative expression. Rather than add to the landfill, keep and create alternative fashion designs. Participants will be encouraged to direct a photoshoot featuring their designs to display along with their fashion illustrations and inspiration boards. 

Theatre: 

Session 1: Intro to Theatre / Improv for beginning actors

This 9 session acting workshop will introduce students to theatre terminology and acting techniques, along with a deep dive into the basics of improvisational theatre.  The afternoons will consist of time for students to practice scripted and unscripted pieces, and receive feedback on their work.

Session 2: Meisner Technique / Improv for intermediate actors

This 9 session acting workshop will take a deeper dive into acting techniques taught by Sanford Meisner.  Students will participate in exercises meant to encourage collaboration with other actors, as well as reach true emotions in imaginary circumstances.  Afternoons will focus on improvisation exercises, with additional time for scripted work.

Literary Arts Academy: 
Intro to Screenwriting
This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of screenwriting and help them bring their cinematic ideas to the page. Using online screenwriting software programs, film clips, collaborative exercises, and individual projects, students will learn the structure of screenplays, how to write compelling scenes, and, finally, how to write their very own short films

Vocal Music:  All Things Vocal! 

A vocal intensive for young singers
In this class you’ll have fun exploring vocal technique, musicianship, and songwriting with vocalist Valerie Troutt.  
“We’re gonna write poetry, sing the blues, eat snacks, have listening parties, do karaoke and learn some wonderful music”  
Ms. Troutt will take you on a new vocal journey everyday sharing her knowledge of Jazz, Soul, Folk, House and Gospel. This class is open to all voice types. 


Audio Production & Engineering

The Music Production summer course will take you from the introduction to
the advanced functions of the MIDI music making process. Working with MIDI gives
individuals the freedom to take control of their entire project, controlling
instruments and arrangements, right down to the individual notes. MIDI or Musical
Instrument Digital Interface is a music industry standard computer language that
communicates the information contained in a musical performance. We will be
looking at the tools, methods, ideas and some helpful tricks used in creating an
original song as well as music production techniques.
This course will be using Logic Pro X as its main Digital Audio Workstation.
Within Logic Pro X we will cover the program basics, as well as the plug-ins and built
in processing available on the workstations. Spanning from basic audio signal
processing to original audio synthesis we will create and manipulate audio with
MIDI. By the end of the course students will have created at least one original song
using all the techniques they have learned. There will not be a showcase, but students
will be sharing what they have created during the last class of the course and families
are invited to attend!

Video Game Design Session One Only

Learn the basic principles of game design, from simple coding and animation techniques in the Unity Game Development IDE (Integrated Development Environment) to building and distributing your own puzzle or adventure prototype game. The coding will be done in visual studio using C# to code simple techniques of moving things around and create fun gameplay that they can then take home and play as a stand alone game by the end of the summer program.

The total fees for each Art Academy session are as follows:

One two-week session $1150

Two two-week sessions $2300

One two-week session for families currently on reduced lunch program $1000

One two-week session for families currently on free lunch, WIC or SNAP program $750

*Any unused camper sponsorship funds will roll over to OSA's Annual Fund, which supports our mission of providing a free arts and accessible education for California youth.
