6th December 2023: An open session on The Decelerator for UK-based freelancers

On 6th December from 10am - 1pm The Decelerator is hosting an open session for freelancers who work in the UK. So if you're a freelancer with passion for and experience of supporting people or organisations to anticipate and prepare for endings, we'd love you to join us.

The Decelerator is a support service for civil society organisations offering information, tools and hands-on support for “better endings”. Now in its pilot phase, the team are setting out to support organisations and individuals to consider and design closures, mergers, CEO transitions, programming ends, and all sorts of endings which are part of the everyday life of organisations and inevitable cycles of change in civil society. The practical learnings will be used to convince funders, regulators and other stakeholders that well-designed, adequately-funded endings can make a world of difference.

This open session will give freelancers the chance to learn about and feed into The Decelerator. Specifically, in this event you will:

  • Hear the insights underpinning the creation of The Decelerator and hear about the practical work that went into the creation of the project over 4 years of work through Stewarding Loss
  • Have an opportunity to share your perceptions and experiences of the need for better endings in civil society and beyond to inform The Decelerator’s design
  • Hear about and feed into The Decelerator's plans to grow a network of freelancers who are practically engaged with the work of supporting and delivering better endings for nonprofits in the UK

We are hoping that a range of people with different skills and experiences will attend this event. Most importantly we are looking for people who are practically engaged with or have experience of supporting organisations with endings. A few of the skills we know this sort of work needs are listed below:

  • Strategists and communications professionals with an eye for story telling and events that create legacy
  • Finance professionals with the ability to create financial scenarios quickly from complicated budget sheets, and devise accurate budgets for the endings of projects, teams and organisations
  • Coaches experienced in the work of supporting individuals and teams to turn to the end of something
  • Facilitators who are experienced in working with teams to put possible endings on the table
  • Conflict mediators and negotiators who are experienced at working with teams or organisations who need to move through conflict to a shared view and beyond that to an ending
  • Crisis management professionals who are skilled at supporting executive and non executive teams through periods of intense challenge and crisis
  • Interim leaders who can step in at short notice and support organisations to navigate the endings of teams, projects or whole organisations
  • Merger experts who know the detailed legal, technical and emotional journey that organisations go on when deciding to merge
  • Service designers who know that the beginnings are as important as the endings, and the endings need to be designed from the beginning
  • Governance experts who know that better endings of all kinds are enabled by good governance rooted in strong relationships, healthy cultures and robust processes
  • ...and many, many other skills and experiences beyond these!
