About the Global Psychology Learning Leadership Institute (LLI)

The LLI began in 2021 as a Presidential Initiative of APA 2020 President, Sandra Shullman, PhD, with the support of the Global Psychology Alliance (GPA). The LLI brings together established and emerging leaders in the field from across the world with the aim of creating a leadership pipeline and ensuring the voices of future leaders of psychology are represented in global efforts. Read more about the LLI here.

The 2023 Global Psychology Learning Leadership Institute (LLI) will be presented in a virtual format that will incorporate both synchronous (live group activities and presentations) and asynchronous (individual or group projects on your own time) methods. The institute will officially begin in March and end in December of 2023, which the possibility of additional opportunities for Emerging Leaders in 2024 and beyond.

The program has three primary components

  1. Actively engaging with monthly expert speaker presentations and workshops (1 speaker/month)
  2. Cross-cultural mentorship meetings with mentor (minimum 1 meeting/month)
  3. Developing an individual or group leadership project focused on one or more of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined below
There will be additional informal spaces created for Emerging Leaders only (approx. 1 per month). Attendance will not be mandatory, but highly encouraged.

LLI projects will be focused on one or more of the following SDGS:

Eligibility

This program is for early career psychologists with a minimum of a master’s level degree in psychology. We define “early-career” as no more than 10 years post graduate degree. Reasonable exceptions will be made for psychologists who have taken time “off” throughout their career for other responsibilities, such as caregiving, and therefore exceed the 10 years post graduate degree but are still early-career. In these cases, you will still be considered, and you are highly encouraged to apply.

Applicants are eligible to be Emerging Leaders only if they do not already hold leadership positions within their national, regional, or international psychological associations. Applicants who hold high level leadership positions in government or academia may not be considered for this program.

Mentorship

Mentors and Emerging Leaders (i.e., mentees) will be matched primarily based on shared interests. The LLI strives to match mentors and mentees from different cultural backgrounds to create the opportunity for a meaningful cross-cultural exchange. Participants will be expected to attend all live sessions and to complete project milestones on time in accordance with the schedule provided. Materials may be given before or after live sessions to enhance discussion and engagement.

Attendance

If you reside in a time zone that makes live attendance difficult, reasonable modification to these expectations will be granted. For example, you will be required to review recordings of sessions you cannot attend live. Your continued participation in the LLI requires ongoing meaningful participation. In the event that you cannot participate in the components outlined above, your status as an Emerging Leader may be re-evaluated.

Point of contact

The American Psychological Association’s (APA) Office of International Affairs (OIA) will serve as primary point of contact for all matters related to the LLI, including general program feedback, schedule challenges, the mentoring relationship, or expectations. APA strongly encourages you to develop relationships with your association’s leadership throughout this process for additional support, guidance, and relationship building. If you need assistance making connections with your association’s leadership, APA will gladly assist.
