What is this survey about?
There are a number of initiatives being delivered to encourage girls into or continuing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects in primary school, high school and University. These education-based initiatives are having very positive effects and there has been an increase in the number of women furthering their STEM education. Between 2011 and 2021, the proportion of women in the UK entering full-time undergraduate courses taking STEM subjects increased from 33.6% to 41.4%.
As a Soroptimist club we would like to understand whether support or change is needed in the next phase of a women’s life - her career. Do women feel able to continue their interests in a STEM subject through the workplace? Are there gender specific obstacles in the way of women establishing themselves in STEM fields of expertise?
The purpose of this survey is to ask women who have studied at least one STEM subject either in High School or University a number of questions to understand whether there are common themes for why women leave STEM careers or never enter them in the first place.
