The internet, via digital platforms, has improved learning and communication for young people. However, it has also facilitated new forms of violence targeting women and girls.
Online Gender-Based Violence (OGBV), or Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) as it is often called, refers to instances of violence carried out in digital spaces, targeting women and girls who use these technologies/platforms. These attacks include:
- Cyber harassment and stalking
- Doxing (exposing private information without consent)
- Non-consensual sharing of intimate images (revenge porn)
- Hate speech, cyberbullying, and targeted misinformation campaigns
- Sextortion and sexploitation, amongst others.
In Nigeria, survivors of OGBV often face significant barriers to justice, including limited access to legal support, weak enforcement of existing laws, and drawn out court processes.
