Members of Maine's Faith Communities Support the Pine Tree Amendment
LD 489 Language: The people of the State have the right to a clean and healthy environment and to the preservation of the natural, cultural and healthful qualities of the environment. The State may not infringe upon these rights. The State shall conserve, protect and maintain the State’s natural resources, including, but not limited to, its air, water, land and ecosystems for the benefit of all the people, including generations yet to come.

Dear Representatives of the Maine State Legislature,

As members of Maine’s faith community, we are writing to urge you to support the Pine Tree Amendment, LD 489. This bill establishes the right to clean air, clean water and a healthy environment in our state constitution.

Nothing could be more fundamental to life than these environmental rights. As people of faith, we see all people, from young children to the elderly; and from all faiths, races and backgrounds as God’s children. We understand our inextricable connection to the natural world and other living beings and our responsibility to preserve and protect them for today and future generations. All deserve clean air to breathe, clean water to drink, and a healthy environment in which to live.

We live in a time of rapid environmental change. Our basic human rights are being challenged by global warming, toxic chemicals and large developments that negatively impact Maine’s lands and waters. The Pine Tree Amendment is what we need to ensure that we can continue to do our jobs, support our families and protect Maine’s treasured environment.

Your vote for the Pine Tree Amendment is critically important. Please join us in protecting the Maine we love by supporting the Pine Tree Amendment.

Sincerely,
