Cleveland Browns Stadium Funding - Take Action! 

It is time to take action to run interference on cozy funding deals between the Haslams and your tax dollars.

For over a year, speculation has been rumbling around Cleveland and Cuyahoga County about plans for a new or renovated Cleveland Browns football stadium and who will pay for it. Will it be on the Lakefront? Will the Haslams, the Browns’ owners, buy the former Ford factory site in Brook Park for a new stadium? Will they be wanting a renovation of the current stadium or a new, domed stadium? How much will the City of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, the State of Ohio, be on the hook for construction costs?

It's all speculation because the talks are all taking place in private. But a couple of things are clear:

1. Dee and Jimmy Haslam, the Cleveland Browns owners, do not expect to pay the full cost themselves, even though they surely could. (February 16, 2024 Signal article by Nick Castele, the link is below)

2. Cuyahoga County Progressive Caucus (CCPC) members think they should: 

Since last summer, CCPC has been surveying members about financing a renovated or new Browns stadium. The response was overwhelming that the Haslams should pay for the stadium themselves; 94.4% of respondents said the Haslams should pay. Additionally, 43.3% of respondents say user fees from those who attend games should contribute to construction costs. Only 5.1% of our members respondents say any public money should be used for stadium construction.

It's time to take action and make our voices heard with our elected representatives. CCPC is asking you to make calls to Cuyahoga Council members, as well as County Executive Chris Ronayne. Whether the emerging plans for a stadium are in Brook Park or on the Lakefront, the County will be expected to make a significant investment in the construction, in the hundreds of millions of dollars, it’s projected. Please take a few minutes to call your County Council member and Executive Ronayne to express opposition to public funding for a Browns stadium, wherever it is located.

1. Give them your name, and make sure you tell County Council members that you are in their district. 

2. I’m a member of the Cuyahoga County Progressive Caucus and have been following the news about the Cleveland Browns owners wanting a new or renovated football stadium.

3. I’m opposed to County funding for a new or renovated Browns stadium and I ask you to do everything you can to oppose it also. Studies show that stadiums usually cost taxpayers more than they get in return. This is especially true for football stadiums

4. Cuyahoga County has more important priorities for our taxes than a football stadium. We’re already hurting from unfunded costs at Gateway; we need to prioritize funding for children and families, the unhoused and meeting community needs.
