TaxFellows Volunteer Interest Form
Thanks for your interest in volunteering with TaxFellows! We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that partners with the Internal Revenue Service and various Stanford departments to provide free tax services to low-income taxpayers and students in the Bay Area. We just finished our first tax season in April 2023! With the help of 13 team members (comprised of tax professionals, attorneys, Stanford students, and other tax enthusiasts), we helped ~178 taxpayers claim more than $150,000 in tax refunds. We also had the lowest e-file rejection rate out of all new VITA sites on the west coast -- a showcase of our commitment to accuracy.

We will begin recruiting volunteers for the 2024 tax season in November 2023. Here's what you can expect:
- Training: All VITA volunteers must pass IRS certification exams to demonstrate their understanding of basic tax law. We will provide hands-on, interactive training to all volunteers at no cost. Training will begin in early January 2024 and will occur over multiple weekends in-person at Stanford (times to be announced in December). We strongly encourage all new VITA volunteers with little to no professional experience in tax to attend all of our training sessions in-person. We will also have shorter refresher courses for more experienced volunteers that will also cover procedures at our site. All training sessions will be livestreamed and recorded.
- Operations: We will serve clients from mid-February through the end of April. Operating hours will be finalized in January based on volunteer availability. You can sign up for shifts every week based on your availability or you can volunteer based on a set schedule. Our main site is located at 562 Salvatierra Walk, Stanford, CA 94305 (ADA accessible). We will also have virtual service via Zoom / Google Meet.
- Rewards: There will be plenty of free food at training, and you can expect occasional cool snacks/drinks during shifts! In May, all volunteers who volunteer at least 30 hours during the tax season will be treated to a steak dinner in Palo Alto attended by special guests (sponsored by a corporate partner of TaxFellows). Circular 230 professionals can receive up to 18 Continuing Education credits for volunteering (more details will be shared in the orientation in January). We also provide resources during and after tax season to help jumpstart your career in tax if you are new to the industry.
