ICCS ReproHack Registration - 12th March 2024 (online event)

The Research Software Engineers (RSE) team from ICCS is organising a ReproHack for VESRI team members and affiliates, and the wider climate research community. A ReproHack is an event where participants come together to reproduce key computational results of research papers. Our event is specifically designed to explore reproducibility in the climate space. You can either join as a participant who gets to reproduce a paper or as an author who submits one. We strongly encourage the submission of climate science research.

The ReproHack will provide a number of benefits for everyone who gets involved:

  • Participants learn hands-on about research reproducibility and software best practices.
    • Going back to your own codes and research after the event you will be more aware on how to improve your own practices.
    • You will have the opportunity to work in a team with an unfamiliar code. Less experienced programmers can see how experienced coders approach the task, and gain confidence talking about their thought processes and problems.
  • Paper authors receive feedback on the reproducibility of their papers as well as the code, which helps them improve. This is particularly useful if you submit papers which have not yet been published, as you can then incorporate the feedback.

The ICCS ReproHack will be an online event over Zoom on March 12, 2024. It will run from 1pm until 6pm GMT. Detailed information and the agenda can be found at the event page.

If you would like to participate in the event please sign up below and we will send you the Zoom details prior to the event. See the general participant guidelines for more information.

If you would like to submit a paper please go to the ReproHack Hub page and follow the instructions, also sign up below. Your paper may already be published, or it can be a preprint or draft paper you want to receive feedback on before submitting for publication. It is only important that the code and data for the underlying computations is available to make it possible to reproduce the results. Have a look at the author guidelines for more information.

You can do both to receive the maximum benefit from the ReproHack!

Reproducibility is a fundamental principle of research, and crucial in scientific disciplines such as climate research which impact decision and policy making and, eventually, our daily lives. In the past decade or so, the so-called replication crisis has led to a number of initiatives and networks which address issues with computational reproducibility. The ReproHack initiative is a great way to help combat the crisis.

If you have any questions about the application form or the event, or need help submitting a paper, please get in touch with us at iccs@maths.cam.ac.uk

Closing date for registrations is February 29, 2024.
