We have seen a litany of devastating attacks against Palestinian civilians these last several weeks. The world cannot turn a blind eye anymore.
We, the undersigned artists, creatives, and cultural activists of various disciplines from Southeast Asia, are extremely affected by the recent events in Gaza, and we pledge our support for the Palestinian people, who have endured over 75 years of Israeli apartheid, military occupation, and genocide.
We urge the immediate ceasefire and cessation of hostilities by all parties. We believe all life is sacred, no matter what faith or ethnicity, and we mourn the deaths of all innocent civilians caught in the conflict.
While all parts of the world have become accustomed to the conditioning, provocation, and annual bombings by Israeli forces towards innocent Palestinians and have allowed it to occur repeatedly, it does not and will never make it right. The escalated attacks this year are devastating, and any person of conscience knows that this catastrophe is unprecedented.
To date, about 1,400 people were killed in the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, and more than 240 people were kidnapped. (Source https://www.npr.org)
Since then, at least 9,770 people—nearly seven times more than the Hamas attack—were killed in nearly a month of Israeli strikes in Gaza, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. Among them were 4,008 children. (Source https://aje.io/3or1i2)
Many more lives are unaccounted for and are buried beneath the ruins and rubble of Gaza. WCNSF (Wounded Child No Surviving Family) is a new term invented in this present war. Experienced humanitarians are devastated by the degree of suffering and the collapse of healthcare in Gaza.
We ask that the leaders of ASEAN call unanimously for an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire in Gaza before more innocent lives are lost.
The motto of the ASEAN organisation is ‘One Vision, One Identity, One Community’. In this hour of humanitarian crisis, we must have one vision, one identity, and one community to stand up for humanity. HUMANITY is precious and must be preserved.
We urge ASEAN countries to halt economic activities with Israel until Gaza is safe from indiscriminate bombings and the people of Palestine are guaranteed safety from becoming military targets.
We call on all ASEAN leaders to call on the government of the USA to stop funding the genocide by Israel in Palestine.
We call for immediate assistance with medical supplies without delay.
We call for psychological support for the children of the war.
