We call on the University of Tokyo to repatriate(return) the remains of Ryukyuan people.
The University of Tokyo continues to retain the remains of at least 31 individuals that were stolen from the Ryukyu Islands. (Report dated December 12, 2025: https://www.u-tokyo.ac.jp/focus/ja/articles/z1304_00160.html).
Furthermore, on February 19, 2026, the University stated that, “as a research institution, we will continue to strive to preserve and manage them in an appropriate and optimal condition,” thereby making clear its policy not to repatriate(return) the remains.
We demand the immediate repatriation(return) of the Ryukyuan ancestral remains.
We plan to submit this petition, along with signatures and comments, to the University of Tokyo by March 2027.
For those who consent, names and comments may also be made public online.
