BALLOT - Participatory Budgeting at PS 139
The PS 139 Parent Association wants you to decide how to spend at least $8,000 from its budget. Each student can vote once and each family can vote once.
STEP 1: LEARN ABOUT THE PROJECTS
Learn about the 9 ideas proposed by students, parents, and teachers that are on the ballot.
1. Playground Blocks & Play Equipment - $4,000
Buy Imagination Playground foam blocks, jump ropes, cones, hula hoops, and other playground toys and equipment. Help kids make huge creations, pretend, learn new skills, and have fun!
2. Makeover Teachers Lounge - $4,000
When copiers break down, teachers aren't able to supply information to students and parents, making their job harder. Purchase or lease new copiers and printers, and buy ink, paper, furniture, coffeepot, and other supplies.
3. Laptops for 3rd Grade - $4,000
Purchase Chromebook laptops that will raise student engagement for all 3rd graders and be used for research. Students will learn to type and publish independent writing, make presentations for collaborative Social Studies projects, and improve reading.
4. Spanish Language & Culture Resources for Dual Language Program - $2,500
Purchase authentic Spanish language and cultural books, games, and classroom materials for Spanish language instruction. Dual language program staff will manage these materials, which are currently missing from their program. (approximately $500/per grade)
5. Fix & Buy New Musical Instruments - $4,000
Build an orchestra program equal in strength to the band program. Buy 15 violins, 15 violas, 8 cellos, and extra parts, and fix broken instruments, to start an orchestra next year with 3rd grade, then gradually expand to 5th grade.
6. Harmony Club for Middle Eastern Culture & Dance - $1,500
12 children in grades 2-4 will meet over 2 weeks to learn Middle Eastern culture and dance, then share their learning in a school performance. Students will study traditional drumming, dance, and costumes, including Sufi Dance, Qawali performance, and Dhol with Dhamal.
7. Music & Theater for Multicultural Learning - $3,500
In June, Funikijam will perform a high energy "globe-spanning musical adventure" for students and teachers, with music, singing, and dancing from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Africa. Teatro SEA will then perform a popular fable with life-sized puppets, in a dual language celebration of Spanish culture.
8. Save the World Clean-Up Club - $500
Help make the playgrounds and neighborhood clean! Purchase rakes, trash bags, shovels, trash picker-uppers, and dustbins for a club that will will walk around the neighborhood to pick up trash, after school once a week.
9. Butterfly Garden - $1,350
Save the bees and butterflies! We want to build a Pollination Way Station! Help us design, decorate and plant a school butterfly garden. Each class, cluster and club will create a unique planter that will represent our school and leave a legacy for the future.
