"Pirates of Penzance" Audition Registration
Please read through all of this information and then respond to the questions. You'll receive a follow up email a week before the auditions, and then we'll see you at auditions!

Auditions for the Huron Valley Community Theatre production of Gilbert & Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance will be held on Monday, June 1 and Wednesday, June 3 starting at 6:30 P.M. in the Little Theatre at Milford High School. (The Little Theatre is just inside the MHS main entrance. We will not be in the big theatre.) 

If you're unable to make it the auditions, but are able to commit to our rehearsals and performances, we would still love to consider you for our cast. Please go ahead and fill out the form and then contact Doug at the email below to arrange a video audition. 

Our performances will be on August 14, 15 & 16 in the Little Theatre. 

This show is for adults and for students who will be in 8th grade and older in the fall. 

For your audition, please prepare 90 seconds of a song that shows your range and style. There likely will not be an accompanist, so plan on singing a capella or with your backing track. We'll provide a bluetooth speaker for playback. Also be prepared to read from the script. 

The show is an "operetta," but that doesn't mean that it's somber and serious. In fact, it's just the opposite!  If you're not familiar with the show- or maybe just for fun!- you might want to check out the 1983 movie version with Linda Ronstadt, Kevin Kline, Rex Smith, and Angela Lansbury. 

Unfortunately, a live orchestra is beyond our budget for this production, so we'll be using recorded tracks.

Our director for Pirates of Penzance is Doug Marquis. Doug is a longtime HVCT member and a Huron Valley Schools music teacher.

Rehearsals will be happening on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings, mostly at Milford High School. There may be a couple of Saturday rehearsals. We will try to work around absences that we know about in advance, but please understand that being part of a show like this is a big commitment. 

In particular, it is vital that everyone be at all rehearsals during the last two weeks of rehearsals.

There is a participation fee of $100 for this show for the first cast member from each family, payable once rehearsals start. The fee for each additional family member is $80. 

The participation fee helps to cover our production costs, including facilities fees, costumes, scenery, music, and publicity. Our production staff are all unpaid volunteers, except for our professional fight choreographer and the MHS tech staff. The fee also covers the cost of t-shirts and the cast party. 

We realize that every family doesn't have equal resources, though, and as a community organization, we don't want anyone to be left out because of money. If the production fee presents a difficulty, please talk to us about a discounted rate.

As a community production, we will also need your help with some of these kinds of things when you're able:

*building and painting sets
*sewing costumes
*finding or making props
*selling program ads
*distributing show posters and sharing show info on your social media accounts
*providing some basic costume and makeup items like shoes, socks/tights, mascara, eye liner, lipstick, etc.
*donating cookies, snacks, and water for concessions
