NB Cognitive Demand should be only aspect needing explanation (as you don't have access to the Discourse discussion which it came from). This is how Ross put it:
"I guess the point was that if trying to define sport, then the
attributes should be as specific to sport as possible. Maybe the better
way, then, of thinking about the cognitive/intellectual side is to ask
how easily someone from outside the sport could cope with the cognitive
demands of the sport. For instance, I reckon most would take an air
rifle and be pretty comfortable in KNOWING what was needed, even if they
couldn’t do it. Same as high jump. Easy conceptual sports. Whereas
gymnastics, field hockey, etc happen in a much more challenging
cognitive and decision-making environment. Is that what we are after
when we talk about cognitive processing and mental skill?
Or maybe, put differently - an alien comes to earth and watches the
olympics. Which sport is easiest for our alien friend to understand?
Which is most complex?"
