Welcome to the UBC GIrls Only Maker Camp registration form!

- - -

Logistically, the Maker Camp has 24 available spots for girls ages 11 to 12 (entering grades 7 to 8), and is free of charge. It will be held at UBC's Michael Smith Laboratories, from July 4th to July 8th, 9am to 3:30pm each day. We do ask that the child make every effort to attend every day, as some of the programming overlaps multiple days.

Please fill out the below, and note that we will try our best to confirm registration (or placement on a waitlist if already full) within 2 days. For specific inquiries, please contact David Ng at db@mail.ubc.ca

Gender *
Note that due to programming funding, this is a girls only Maker Camp. If you have a boy that is interested in similar programming, we highly encourage you to explore registration into one of our collaborator's workshops (http://www.geeringup.apsc.ubc.ca/). As well, please be aware that we also have an inclusive view of the word “girl” and we welcome trans, genderqueer, and non-binary folks interested in the workshop.
Age: *
Note this Maker Camp is aimed at kids ages 11 to 13 (entering grades 7 to 8). Children of other ages or grade level can also register if there is space available.
Have you attended this UBC Maker Camp before? *
Note that due to demand and the fact that this is a free camp, we will give priority to children who have not attended one of our previous Maker Camps.
Experience with DIY/Maker culture: *
We plan on making every effort to adapt and prep our programming according to the variable levels of maker experience in our class. Please provide a short description of your child's familiarity with maker activities, crafts, coding, etc as this helps ensures a great experience for all involved! Note, that it is fine if he/she has no experience!

Parent's (Guardian's) Information
Please note that you will be responsible for transporting your child to and from the Michael Smith Laboratories (UBC). Drop off time is between 8:50am and 9am and pick up time between 3:30pm and 3:45pm.

As well, lunch and snacks are not provided in this Maker Camp, so please ensure that your child brings a packed lunch. We will be arranging for adult supervision during lunch and snack times. In case of allergies, we ask you do not pack any peanut products.

In the section below, we also ask for permission to take photos. Every year we host a real time blog, so that folks like yourself can see what the campers are up to. We don't use names on the blog, but it's great to be able to showcase their activities (you can see last year's at http://makercamp2015.blogspot.ca/). Note that you do not have to sign as we can also make sure your child is not in any of this year's photos.

Finally, we'll also need a mailing address, as we'll be sending you a small package that deals with obtaining consent/assent forms for a Research Project connected to the Camp. Here, we are essentially trying to figure out what effect these kinds of equity oriented programs have on young people, more so when the programming revolves around creativity, innovation and making things. The forms will basically ask for permission from both the parent (consent) and the child (assent), but is not required for participation with the program. As a heads up, the research portion will take less than 2 hours of time in total, involving a short online pre and post survey, as well as two 40 minute blocks within the camp, where girls will be asked to interview one another using guided questions. Full details will be mailed to you, so that you can chat with your child about the research. We plan on having the pre-survey available in the week before the start of the camp.
