A little different from our usual SOCAN Song Camp Mondays, these new Virtual Song Camp Mondays keep with the same theme of supporting the artistic development of Canada's music creators by connecting songwriters, however, these new virtual sessions will connect members from across the continent from the comfort of their own homes and/or home studios during this period of COVID-19 social isolation.
Three songwriter applicants will be selected and paired up for a virtual co-write session every week. Participants for these "Virtual Song Camp Mondays” are selected at random from all submissions, about a week before each session. If you’re selected, we’ll contact you at that time.
Once your submission has been received, it will remain on file throughout the calendar year.
Each session will run from morning through the afternoon (specific times TBD, depending on the writers' time zones). A “SOCAN 101” session will be hosted virtually by one of our SOCAN A&R representatives at some point during the the session in order to help explain how to register the co-written song with SOCAN and all the ways to get paid!
The challenge? To complete one new song by the end of the day.
SOCAN Virtual Song Camp Mondays' primary mission is to foster positive collaboration among SOCAN’s members. Writers participating in these song camps have asked us about song splits and master ownership. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide you legal advice in these areas, and any decisions regarding them are yours to make. Based on previous experience, we found that most writers have told us that the practice of equal publishing share splits among the creators in the room is the best way to ensure that everyone is focused on creating good music! To this end, we suggest that you consider this model, start everything from scratch at the camp, and most importantly have these discussions among yourselves before the start of your sessions.
Requirements:
You MUST be willing to work collaboratively and cooperatively.
You MUST enter the session with an open mind and be open to working across all genres and skill levels.
You MUST be a SOCAN Member to apply. For more information on becoming a member, please visit
