Foster Medical Concerns
Non-Emergency Medical Concerns
For any non-emergency medical issues, please complete the medical concern form. Submissions are sent directly to our Foster Manager and Foster Assistant.

Medical concerns submitted before 5:00 PM will be reviewed and addressed the same day, based on urgency. Submissions received after 5:00 PM will be addressed the following business day. Please keep an eye on your email for a response from the foster team. If applicable, email any relevant photos to foster@caabr.org and fosterassistant@caabr.org to help us assess your foster pet's condition.  

Life-threatening Emergencies
If your foster pet is experiencing a life-threatening emergency during our staffed hours (Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm) - Please contact the Foster Team at foster@caabr.org and fosterassistant@caabr.org or call 225-408-5369 to let them know you are on your way. 

If an emergency occurs outside of staffed hours (before 8:00 am or after 5:00 pm Monday - Friday, or anytime Saturday and Sunday) - Please go directly to LSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital or call 225-578-9600. After your arrival, a CAA Director will be contacted by LSU to approve or deny the visit. 

Examples of life-threatening emergencies would be:
  • labored or no breathing
  • bleeding from nose, mouth, rectum, or blood in urine/excessive bleeding
  • Ingestion or suspected ingestion of a poisonous substance  
  • seizures, unsteadiness, unconsciousness
  • trauma or fractured bones
  • severe vomiting or diarrhea (more than two episodes in a 24-hour period, or accompanied by other signs of illness)
** For kittens and puppies under 3 months of age experiencing the symptoms below - Act Immediately!**
  • Low body temperature; the animal feels cold to the touch
  • Extreme lethargy; can't get up, unable to stand, etc.
  • Gasping for breath; open mouth breathing
  • Meowing, crying out
