134,000 Montanans, including 16,000 Missoulians, struggle to put healthy food on their tables. Together, we can change that by taking the SNAP challenge and supporting Double SNAP Dollars during Hunger Action Month.
Double SNAP Dollars helps make fresh, local food affordable for all. This means more community members can access the quality of food they desire and eat with the dignity they deserve while supporting local farmers and businesses. Taking the SNAP Challenge is one way to take action during Hunger Action Month and show your support for healthy bodies and healthy communities by raising awareness of hunger and the Double SNAP Dollars initiative, which helps Montanans put more healthy food on their table.
The effects of hunger and poor nutrition affect us all, even if not felt as directly as an empty stomach. This campaign is an opportunity to take an active role in creating a healthier community for yourself and your neighbors. The SNAP Challenge gives participants a glimpse into some of the struggles faced by thousands of low-income Montanans who are trying to put food on their tables. The $16,000 for 16,000 Missoulians campaign helps fund Double SNAP Dollars in Missoula and around the state, which in turn helps families who live in poverty day in and day out afford more of the fruits and vegetables they need to feel healthy and good. Are you up to the challenge (see the rules below)?Commit to living on a SNAP budget for 1, 3, 5, or 7 days. We encourage a full week of participation so you get the most out of the challenge and get a better understanding the struggles of a SNAP budget.
Download our toolkit to help you along the way! It includes some tips and resources: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pbKRZFVav21aPfzpq1huD9AmpWfdhn4De6srHTNYwoo/edit?usp=sharing
Rules: 1. Your food budget for the challenge is $5 per day per person for ALL your food and beverages (yes, even coffee) during the seven-day challenge – that’s $35 for the week. This number is somewhere between the minimum and maximum SNAP benefit for Missoulians. If you’re curious to learn more about how SNAP benefits are determined, visit the Montana Department of Health and Human Services website.
2. Shop for groceries like you normally would, but be sure to stick within your Challenge budget of $35 for the week. Although SNAP benefits are thought to be supplemental to a food budget, oftentimes the SNAP benefit is all that a family can realistically use to buy food. All food purchased and eaten during the SNAP Challenge week, including dining out, must be included in your total spending.
3. Optional: You can use Double SNAP Dollars if you shop at a location that offers the program. That means you can double your budget for that day only (from $5 to $10). Find Double SNAP Dollars locations on our website, DoubleDollarsMT.com.
4. If you eat food from your garden, that you already have at home, or that was given to you by friends, family or work, account for it in your SNAP budget.
5. Keep track of receipts spending and take notes of your experiences throughout the week, including if you visit a Double SNAP Dollar retailer. We have a worksheet to help you with this!
