Following the results of the 2016 election, the Regis community is coming together to ask that Regis University’s Northwest Denver campus become a Sanctuary Campus for undocumented immigrants. We the students, alumni and other members of the Regis community ask that the administration begin working to achieve this status immediately.

To make Regis into a Sanctuary, we request that you publicly and uncompromisingly declare that within the boundaries of the Regis campus, undocumented persons be welcomed and that it is your impetus that they feel safe. We implore you to issue a call to action to the Denver community at large, stating our duty as people to stand by those whose safety and overall wellbeing are being threatened, both as of now and by the impending political climate.

Within the bounds of Regis, we specifically ask that you vow to continue to serve, protect and educate DACAcumented students, who are at risk of losing their DACA status once the current President-Elect is placed in office. We view this as the most immediate and Jesuit way of protecting our brothers, sisters, and others who are being unjustly targeted.

In congruence with this, we the Regis University student body ask that you allow for undocumented peoples to gather on the Regis campus so that they may receive services such as temporary housing in the Chapel and the blanket of protection from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that we are asking you to extend over the Regis campus.

We implore you to only allow ICE onto our campus in exigent circumstances. We ask that you not permit campus security to get involved with matters of immigration enforcement within the realm of our campus. This is possible through restrictions that were placed upon ICE regarding schools and places of worship in 2011 (See this document: https://www.ice.gov/doclib/ero-outreach/pdf/10029.2-policy.pdf).

As a Jesuit institution, Regis University must confront the issue of deportation. Per our school values, we have a duty to be men and women for and with others. This means that we, as an institution, have a responsibility to stand in solidarity with vulnerable and marginalized people in our communities, such as undocumented people. We have a duty, both as caring citizens and as Jesuits, to stand in solidarity with undocumented people. The most direct and effective way for us to do so is to become a Sanctuary Campus, that fulfills both the duty of the traditional Sanctuary Campus through supporting its DACAcumented students, as well as fulfilling the part of a sanctuary place of worship by being a place where undocumented people in the community may receive physical sanctuary from persecution.

Finally, we beseech you to consider the lives of those who would use our campus as a refuge, both as students and as members of the local community. When making this decision, we ask that you reflect upon our institution’s Jesuit values.
