SPOGOMI is short for "Sport Gomihiroi (picking up trash)", a sport in which teams compete with each other for points based on the amount and type of trash collected in a given area within a set time limit. The slogan "Picking up rubbish is a sport!" is the slogan of this sport, born in Japan in 2008.
The appeal of this SPOGOMI is that not only the trash is eliminated through competition, but with teamwork, and depending on the strategy and tactics, anyone can "win", regardless of age or gender. It is the first time that this event is organised in South Africa to reduce the amount of waste ending up in the ocean and to create an opportunity for many people to focus on the problem of marine litter, which is becoming more and more serious around the world, and the most marine litter is generated by land and cities. The winner of the qualifying tournament, which will be held in around 20 countries around the world, will represent their country and receive a ticket for the SPOGOMI World Cup to be held in Japan (Tokyo) in November, 2023.
There are no age limits and everyone is invited to participate for free. We encourage you to bring your friends and family and sign up as a team of three. In the event of a large number of applicants, applications may be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis or by drawing lots.
