This project designs and applies new methods to stimulate and evaluate coastal environments, promoting tourism uses based on the sustainable use of natural heritage.
It relies on the active participation of civil society (public and private), generating processes of collaboration and consensus for a more solid and lasting governance.
These Ecoareas are not a new protection figure, although they can enhance existing ones, as well as promote the creation of new protected areas or custody agreements.
The Ecoareas refer to duly certified spaces for which a voluntary adhesion is proposed in the participation processes.
As with other certifications, the Ecoareas do not require their own legal status. In fact, as one of its objectives, the project aims to contribute to facilitate the work of the Administrations: agreeing the methods and supporting their application.
This initiative will generate a Canary Network of Coastal Ecotourism Areas, increasing security for users and enhancing public access, free and free of charge.
The Ecoarea is based on an evaluation system and a public and transparent validation tool, accessible to all colectives that want to participate.
For its implementation, it is necessary the local institutions support and an organized civil society involved in the process.
The Ecoareas will facilitate new proposals for sustainable and responsible use of the environment. It will also boost the Blue Economy linked to the litoral, with greater social involvement and offering guarantees for the conservation of resources.
The Ecoareas intend to provide a micro-scale of solutions and alternatives, promoting at the same time major dynamics materialized in the Canary Islands Network of Coastal Ecotourism Areas.
They are small seeds to improve the future of these environments and their populations.
The limitations and legally established standards will be respected, for which proposals for improvement may be submitted to the competent authorities.
