Sparrows that Live On (Fear) (May 1-3 in Seaver Theatre Large Studio)  written by Alastor Chow, directed by Chloe Zhao (PZ '26).

Synopsis

A sparrow is found dead in a logistics warehouse, triggering an urban rumor about sparrow killings. A man cuts ties with his sister and desperately seeks self-protection. A mother endures domestic violence to protect her child. A customer tries to sell books at a second-hand bookstore; the owner hesitates. At the same time, a girl faces her master in a kendo duel. Five actors play fourteen roles. Five stories collide, all disrupted by a single sparrow. In this swirling nightmare, who truly conquers the night?

Director's note:
This is a piece of five completely different stories stitched together by characters morphing in and out from one another. It’s about this shared unnamed something that disturbs each world, some people scramble to protect themselves, some fight, some get pulled into the abyss of trauma and pain. What I love about this play is how these stories are told without spelling anything out. Scenes instead of being an agency of temporal development, resemble more pieces of a shattered puzzle, broken apart but somehow connected together. You observe the characters live as they move forward, hesitate, resist and give in. I envisioned the stage to be packed with stories yet with none right in front of your eyes. I hope for the audience to leave the theater with what their vision brought them to and what hides beneath that. This is going to be a fun piece to craft and I am really excited to make it happen :)
