PHYSICAL EDUATION (PE)

The Physical Education course is designed to expose the 6th grade student to a wide variety of “lead-up” games that will help them develop gross motor skills required for more advanced sports or games being taught in the 7th and 8th grades. It is our intention to provide and teach appropriate practices of physical education to the students so that they become a more physically educated person. In addition to loco-motor skills, students will have a conditioning portion in each class that will show the benefits and importance of health-related fitness skills such as muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular health.

TECHNOLOGY (STEM)

Come explore the world of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and MATH) and discover how it all ties into the world around you. Science impacts the technology of yesterday, today, and the future. Students apply the concepts of physics, chemistry, and Engineering to activities and projects. You will learn hands on about freezing point by making ice cream. You will learn all about the science and technology that goes into cleaning up an oil spill. You will discover the science behind architects and engineering feats of the world and try to make the strongest craft stick bridge known to man.

FAMILY CONSUMER SCIENCE: TEEN SURVIVAL

Students will study units on: Self-discovery (individual strengths/weaknesses & opportunities for growth), Stress management (handling stress, what causes stress, what to look for, how to free yourself from it), time management, communication, manners, basic hand stitching & how to sew on a button, kitchen safety, environmental awareness (statics/recycling, general global awareness), how to read food labels & make good food/nutrition choices "eat this not that", drug & alcohol awareness, basic hygiene.

GROUP #2 [SEMESTER] IF YOU CHOOSE GROUP #2 YOU WILL RANDOMLY BE ASSIGNED TO TWO OF THESE COURSES

MUSIC6: UKULELE

The Music 6 course is designed to introduce students to many areas of musical creation. Students will be asked to participate in critical listening activities, group singing, and group ukulele instruction. Music’s influence upon our lives and culture will also be examined.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE: SPANISH

Foreign Language (Spanish)- This course is designed to give students a basic exploratory introduction to foreign language and the Spanish culture. This may be accomplished by direct presentation of vocabulary and/or by question/answer, puzzles, songs, stories, artwork, learning games etc. Map study and descriptions of normal life and festive occasions will serve as further introduction to the culture.

INTRO TO ART

This course is designed to introduce students to the world of fine arts. Students will learn and use the Elements of Art which are the building blocks that every student incorporates into their art work.

INTRO TO COMPTUERS

Intro. to Computers-This is a hands-on course designed to introduce students to keyboarding skills, cloud computing, G Suite, Pivot animation and movie making.

BEGINNING BAND [YEAR-LONG]

Beginning Band is designed for students who wish to begin learning a band instrument. Students enrolled in the course will begin to develop an understanding and appreciation of music through listening, performance, theory and skill development. Students will perform in two evening concerts during the school year.

CHORUS [YEAR-LONG]

6TH Grade Chorus course is designed for students who wish to study vocal production of music fundamentals with focus on the areas indicated under Course Objectives. Emphasis will be placed on providing each student with positive growth experiences and a variety of performing experiences. Students are asked to attend a minimum of two evening performances and choir adjudication during the school year.
